Patriarchy in Native communities looks like:
- when non-Native men are welcome at the drum, but women & two spirit people are kept away in the name of tradition & vague pan-Indian “teachings”
- when you look around any Native Direct Action movement, tip to tail it’s usually run by Aunties, elders, & LGBT2S folks. Yet when we see the officials in our Native government and monetary power, it’s majority cis/het men.
- most well known Native artists are men, / male Native artists are given access, platforms, recognition & compensation at much much higher rates than women & 2S people.
- Media representation of Native stories often prioritizes the voices of Native men over Native women & 2S People, even on stories that are about Native women & 2S people.

-Complicated ideas RE: people who menstruate being “too powerful” to participate in some ceremonies while on their moontime, yet men are never subjected to similar limitations in ceremony / yielding their power*

*this one is complex, and not applicable to all communities
-Tongue in cheek, yet also so common: https://twitter.com/em0jisocks/status/1275212243773227008?s=21 https://twitter.com/em0jisocks/status/1275212243773227008
- Patriarchy also holds hands with white supremacy/ anti-Blackness in Native communities. That could be an entire thread of its own.
Pow wow emcees: almost always cis /het men. Its also one of the jobs at a pow wow that is compensated well. https://twitter.com/tradishskinbyrd/status/1275705301765959686?s=21 https://twitter.com/tradishskinbyrd/status/1275705301765959686
-Reproductive decisions being made under the pressure of blood quantum/ status laws.
- distancing or flexibility from a community’s matriarchal traditions, but insisting on the immutability of traditions that center cis/het men.
- observing how next to no cis/het Native men are engaging with this discussion at all
-Men in power happy to talk a lot about MMIWG2S, but not nearly as keen to advocate for the changes necessary to actually stop the violence (ie: defunding the police/RCMP, supporting & centering survivors, ending the backlog, holding people & institutions accountable.)
- refusing to engage with even the most neutral discussion of patriarchy in Native spaces, getting defensive saying #notallmen, never admitting they’re being patronizing:
