Hi! You thought we were done calling out labels today? NopE! We're tired of being in a scene with SO MANY fucking talented black artists and seeing labels with full white rosters (or with like 1 or 2 black artists signed). The worst offenders are almost always punk labels.
So, the first wave of labels with no black artists to be seen on their current rosters:
@nosleeprecords
@fat_wreck
@FueledByRamen
@matadorrecords (except for one member of QOTSA)
@heavenlyrecs
(2)
Second wave, these labels have only 1-4 black artists, current roster.
@mergerecords
@RoughTrade @RoughTradeRecs
@rfcrecords
@T3Hrecords
@dfarecords
@saddlecreek
@secretlycndian
@4AD_Official

This is not a callout for platitudes. This is a callout for action. Y'all haven't been signing black artists or even bands with black artists. black people are pushed into creative boxes in music bc of uneven recognition and it's disgusting. We don't "see" black ppl in (4)
certain genres and it is simply because independent and large record labels refuse to scout and sign black artists across genres. One black person on your label is bullshit. Manae and I are friends with so many fucking incredible black musicians in the Chicago scene ALONE. (5)
What can be done? Well, instead of sending placating PR tweets, you can scout and sign some fucking black bands and solo artists today. When shows are a thing again, we never want to see an all-white, all-male, all-cishet bill ever a-fucking-gain. (6)
Manae and I both run sound. We're both trans/fem presenting. We're both queer. We are literally constantly in this industry and have been since we were 13 years old. We are witnesses to this genre bottleneck and creative silencing of black musicians. It stops now. No more PR bs
ALSO THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER FUCKING LABELS WITH NO BLACK ARTISTS. WHY? If y'all are thirsty for metal, punk, prog, rock, dreampop, queercore, whatever, i can provide you a handy list of fantastic chicago artists that you should be fucking talking to.
@Polyvinyl reached out after Manae posted a tweet today and we are glad they did so. We hope that more artists and labels start holding one another accountable in order to center black musicians. None of the music we enjoy would exist without the contributions of black artists.
