9 hours into their meeting, the @LASchools Board is finally discussing 3 motions on @LASchoolPolice presence at LAUSD campuses.
Goldberg's resolution is up first, followed by McKenna, then Garcia.

In his remarks @DrGeorgeMcKenna:

- Claimed LA School police "had" to use pepper spray on children

Monica Garcia is reading a letter from a Black LAUSD parent and educator: "It's time to dismantle the house that racism built. Let us take a risk and imagine a new house, one built by creativity and courage... Let's build that better and safer house and move it forward together."
. @DrGeorgeMcKenna is now claiming that LAUSD students don't actually want to defund the police, and are being exploited and manipulated by adults to *pretend* they are scared of police presence on campus. He says calls to defund the police are "noise for the sake of noise."
LASPD Chief Todd Chamberlain has now been given space to give a spiel about how compassionate and caring the @LASchoolPolice are, and how scary and crime-ridden schools are. He predictably emphasizes the specter of mass shootings.
"We have to ask ourselves: what is the right role of the school police, if any, given what we've heard from our students?" Kelly Gonez says divestments from the school police should be redirected to supports for Black students. She supports the Goldberg motion.
. @DrGeorgeMcKenna says he disagrees with the Goldberg/Gonez/Melvoin motion because if the LA School Police are limited to the perimeter of campus, they won't be able to "bond" with the students.
