I'll be reporting from the Justice Center and other exotic downtown locales this evening, so drop me a line if you think I need to know something. I know people are exhausted and on edge, so be safe out there and watch out for each other.
If you see me being assaulted/detained for the crime of "Doing Journalism In Public," please ask them to stop.
For reasons I’m sure are obvious, I’m especially keen on hearing about any Boogaloo or Proud Boys or Patriot Prayer types who meant be creeping about, FYI.
Can someone send me a pic of the shirtless guy w Nazi tatts from laying it please?
*from last night
By the way, if you want to come to the Justice Center but are afraid to, you really shouldn’t be. The scene early, before the cops charge, is very community driven—lots of laughing and people talking.
Always relevant:
Immense respect at all Tri-Met drivers honking in solidarity. I’ve heard at least two every night.
Jahbless these chaps who are doing a multiple night run of shows at the protests. (Also Jahbless stoned pizza guy.)
Some knowledge booms being dropped about bystanderism.
Speaker went on and made some fantastic points about what people will say about this experience in the future—did you do it for the ‘Gram or did you do it to change things? Did you just come out here to take pictures?
Apocalypse Blues
It’s still very early but the overall vibe amongst the gathered feels a lot less paranoid and acusitory comparative to the last couple of nights. People seem refocused and jovial, fresh even.
There hasn’t been anyone in the street thus far at all—though folks are diligently manning the curb in anticipation. Prob 300 out here now? Only seen a couple of possible boneheads and they seem to have left for the time being.
Backdoor scene. WOC asking someone from the PPB to come out and speak face to face. “I don’t want to talk when you declare a civil disturbance and charge us, I want to talk now.”
I can see the occasional head in the JC looking out at the backdoor scene and a couple of PPB SUVs have rolled by reminding everyone they have lights but that’s been it.
If I’m the heat the general attitude out here is unnerving bc so many seem to be back on their bullshit. COINTELPRO just ain’t hitting the same tonight PPB.
Both the acrimony and noise levels are rising. Folks are now standing on 3rd (THE HORROR!!!) but it’s really not an issue.
This guy is being ridiculous, yelling at a Black woman who I recognize and calling her a cop. She is clowning dude now, someone come get yr boy
I mean she clowned ole sport into the loudspeaker and everything. Damn.
Guy is now walking around calling her a bitch very loudly to others, this is not being well received. WOC in question has moved on to the protest... which is why we’re here. Methinks if you’re calling women bitches you don’t come to a lot of these.
Crowd behind the JC making noise for the prisoners.

I’m told the heat is staging nearby... as I was typing this the crowd cleared out of the street after being told LE is getting ready.
250-300 had the backdoor chanting for Quanice Hayes. There is a concerted—and seemingly mostly agreed upon—effort to stay out of the streets.
WOC is still leading things and they just got choked up during an impassioned chant. Crowd went wild with cheers when they choked up briefly.
An impassioned but organized scene.
I think anyone who’s been here several nights would agree that although things continue to constantly evolve one thing holds absolutely true: when the PPB doesn’t instigate there isn’t any violence. ZERO reason the current PPB strategy couldn’t have been employed the first week.
Another thing I can unequivocally state: it’s way too hot out here tonight.

(There’s a bad police/heat joke in there but after the other night’s LBAD pun Imma lay off.)
Shirtless white guy shines his lights on the crowd thinking everyone will move and the revs his engine at protesters. People obviously yell at this and this maniac & his classy wife get out of the car yelling about their child being in the car. So don’t threaten a crowd w a car?
Unreal stupidity by shirtless white guy. Crowd gasped when he and Classy Cass revealed they have a child in the car and yet were revving their engine at protesters.

“I live here!” he shouts, as though that explains it. The JC?
We are now five minutes past midnight, or The Beating Hour, as it’s known in downtown Portland. Still no sign of the @PortlandPolice, which makes it clear they could have done this every night and saved the city millions in cash and innumerable citizens a great deal of anguish.
Snack Van vibe check: still cool as hell
We are now at the Little Beirut Black Lives Matter Mural Gallery (formerly known as the @Apple child labor propagation factory).
(He posts from an iPhone)
A long moment of silence followed by a reading of names which inspires tears from our speaker and emotional shouts of support from the crowd. Beautiful moment surround by these murals. That’s what all this is about, do not let anyone twist that.
MAX roles through, gets applause. Driver says something on mic to protesters along the lines of “You guys are great but we have a schedule and we’re way behind so thanks!” Some inebriated trams riders gaze upon the scene, deeply confounded.
They’re filming everyone through these at every moment, FYI.

So mich Native support and solidarity these four weeks and you love to see it
Not sure how many will get this reference but “We don’t die, we multiply!” should really be a chant.
I’d say it looks like George has a crown, but, uh, late stage capitalism is horrifically racist.
(So were the other stages of capitalism, FYI)
Every night out here I feel like you learn something. I’m listening to someone describe growing up as a Black queer in the adoption system and how that made them hate being Black—but finding community helped them be who they are. 1/
Moments like this are powerful. Moments like this are important. And I’m a journalist who has been thinking and writing about this shit for years y’all—every white person can glean important knowledge from these difficult convos.
Those who have been following my coverage of the protests closely: our boy the Boomer is here again tonight. He’s apparently been out every night but one since he was inspired to joined the march that night in NW. Legend.
I just walked back to the JC and folks: this beautiful mfer is still going.
PEOPLE OF PORTLAND: LISTEN TO THE POLICE! IF YOU DO NOT THERE WILL YOUTHS OF COLOR THROWING A FOOTBALL CALMLY ON EVERY CORNER. WHAT WILL WE DO THEN?
Alright. It’s 3AM & I am losing money I don’t have to be here on this blessedly non-violent evening. If you can spare some scratch it’s massively appreciated. Again: it’s literally for therapy & food.
