Why “support local” is the dumbest phrase in football.

[A THREAD]
First off, being a sports fan is about identity and association, passion and history, excitement and drive.

While not being able to see your team live could slightly affect these sorts of things, it certainly doesn’t take away from all the factors. It will still be entertaining.
Secondly, many fans across the world don’t even have a local club, or their local club may be in a very poor league.

Personally I think it’s totally understandable if one of these people wants to support a team in a larger league. They’re still just as big of a fan as locals.
I mean some of these fans have to wake up crazy early or stay up crazy late to watch matches ffs. Surely this should be respected not hated on.
Another reason is that many people may not be a local but they will still have a connection to the club.

They may have family members who support the club or maybe they have ancestry from that country. But I assume this isn’t right either, is it?
The only time I’d question someone is if, for example they lived in London and supported United.

I mean you have several top level teams in your city, but even then I could easily be convinced otherwise.
In conclusion, “Support your local” is one of the worst phrases in football. It’s completely ignoring of so many factors and reasons.
