/9 I am keeping this thread on @twitter, as the place of the debate. I sometimes tweet my own opinion but this I send as CEO of @DublinRCC – my reflection on #Ibelieveher Her & #BelieveSurvivors
/9 Starting with a reminder that @DublinRCC & all its services are at the disposal of all survivors. The confidential 24/7 National Helpline 1800 77 8888 hears & will hear all those who look to it for support. You can call for yourself, for a friend, whenever something happened.
/9 Sexual harassment & abuse including rape causes harm & injury to a person in their most intimate selves, damage which can last a lifetime. No matter how well a person heals, they may carry cars of that injury for ever. Naming the abuse, the injury=a crucial step to healing.
/9 At @DublinRCC, our hearts go out to all those who yet again are naming their hurt, their injury in #believesurvivors, #Ibelieveher We hope they will get the support they need to heal. Speaking their truth, being heard, is not only a healing step. It is their right.
/9 @DublinRCC stands for, fights for, advocates for the rights of all survivors of sexual violence to receive #AccessToJustice as well as to health.
/9 To all who say that people shouldn’t speak out on social media, that #MeToo has gone too far, we ask: where are the good, accessible non-blaming mechanisms that don’t treat the survivor as the problem? We’re a long way from those yet.
/9 We have compared society's refusal to hear survivors with failing to put a sluice gate in a dam – that dam will eventually burst.Flooding & damage will happen. We need much better systems to report..Survivors need to have #AccesstoJustice. We need perpetrators held to account.
/9 We must fight to ensure the rights of survivors are upheld & vindicated. We must do that in a way that respects the rights of others too. Within resources, we'll help survivors who need support reporting. Not enough we know. We need better systems too.
/9 The draft #PFG calls sexual and domestic violence an epidemic. It is. We used that phrase before. It'll take brave survivors calling it out, exposing the epidemic. Also proper reporting systems, resources for healing & zero tolerance by society to stop it. And see 9A/9 (!)
A/9 To finish as I started, @DublinRCC is here for the survivors, for their rights, for an equal society. The Helpline at 1800 778888.The healing, support & educational services. The advocacy. Please support its campaigns & work if you can https://mysplink.com/drcc/ .
