Words also have the power to hurt and exclude. we will cease use of the singular term "Master" in favor of the full term "Master Sommelier" in all formal communication and programming. We apologize for the deep pain understandably caused by that practice.
It has also been brought to our attention that certain students of this organization made statements online in direct conflict with our anti-discrimination policy and what we stand for. We are actively investigating this and will take swift action if needed.
Aspiring Master Sommeliers must know in no uncertain terms that racial prejudice will not be tolerated. Not by our members, and not by those seeking membership.
We are committed to combatting structural racism. Diversity and inclusion will make our organization and the wine industry stronger, and we pledge to back our words with meaningful and sustainable changes to ensure that happens.
