In honor of #HappyFathersDay2020 #FathersDay , I want to dedicate #ScholarSunday to my dad's dissertation focused on cancer epidemiology titled "Coping mechanisms of Sub-Saharan African female immigrants with Breast Cancer".

A thread/
My dad's dissertation is a qualitative study that explores coping mechanisms for sub-Saharan African (SSA) women at varying stages of Breast cancer, a communicable disease that isn't usually explored deeply in the literature for this particular group.

We love NOVELTY.

Why do coping mechanisms matter? 1) Coping mechanisms give us insight into how people deal with stress, and 2) there is evidence that suggests that coping mechanisms are AS important as medicine.

And we know these experiences can vary across culture, races, and ethnicities!

3/
That said, my dad asked three questions to get at how SSA women in the U.S. are faring with Breast Cancer:

What are current coping mechanisms for SSA women in the U.S. for breast cancer? How does this change for breast cancer treatment and breast cancer remission?

What he finds is that aside from healthcare support, SSA women in the U.S. use crying, religion, family support, social support networks, problem-focused and emotion-focused methods, and relaxation techniques to deal with breast cancer.

As I mentioned in my past thread, if you are interested in his work (and he has A LOT of experience in the healthcare space), please DM me or REPLY with folx who I can contact on behalf of him :)
