Ok, so a “who the hell is René Brooks and what is Black Girl Lost Keys?” Thread is long overdue.
If you’re just following, welcome. If you’re a longtime follower maybe you’ll learn something new. Either way it’ll be off my to-do list and that pleases me.

When I was 7ish my mother was told that I have ADHD and I needed to be medicated - after the school tested me without her permission. For a Black woman and her Black child, huge no no. They repeated this at 11. They never explained what ADHD is or how it would impact my life.
At 25, I experienced a depression so crippling that I had to go on medical leave from my job. Six months in with no end in sight, I mentioned this story to my therapist on a fluke. Shortly thereafter I was tested and wound up being treated for ADHD. That was 10 years ago.
In 2014, I started a blog called Black Girl Lost Keys after unsuccessfully scouring the net to find the stories of Black people talking about their ADHD experiences. Living with ADHD while Black is lonely and isolating.

In 2017, after seeing how Black women/femmes/non-binary folks were subjected to abuse in online support groups, I started one so we could speak in peace. It’s called the Unicorn Squad, and it is solely for members who fit the demographic. https://blackgirllostkeys.com/unicornsquad
