There’s stuff you can blame on Russia or China. But the extent to which you blame Russia—or any foreign country—for worsening relations and increased anymosity between citizens by race or ideology is an attempt to ignore a true accounting of what’s been happening domestically.

Focus on the foreign subversive threat is what you do when you desperately cling to the fiction that we’re not actually divided at all; that we agree on the basic things; and we all have the same concept of the Good. If you’re scared to face reality, please retire from politics.
