Not so much about the actual show itself, but the people who absolutely refuse to acknowledge its tokusatsu influences (*cough*r/ShingekiNoKyojin*cough*) because it makes it "less cool", "diminishes its quality", or "remove all of its meaning" are scrubs, just saying lol https://twitter.com/kyoajin/status/1274135807343972354
"but those monster movies have no meaning, it's all spectacle!" is the same response I get everytime I point out how the series has strong influences from Ultraman, Godzilla, Gamera and so on. Isayama said himself that he grew up with tokusatsu and was completely fascinated by it
Just because the manga touches on serious issues like war and oppression doesn't put it above other tokusatsu or tokusatsu-inspired media, because there is countless other toku media that deal with the same thing, LIKE ULTRAMAN AND KAMEN RIDER.
And do I even need to mention how many of the Godzilla films and a good number of the Gamera movies have at least some message about society, politics, the environment, and so on?
There's this divide when it comes to people who enjoy anime and/or toku, and SSSS.Gridman was a great example, bc you had people liking the show for completely different reasons. 1 side had no idea what a Trigger anime was, & the other was totally oblivious to the og and TsuPro
I know it's a "different strokes for different folks" kinda deal, & I don't have a say in what people can enjoy, but one thing I always see is people from both sides saying "I don't watch [anime/toku] because it's stupid and weird" or something along those lines
And as someone who watches both, I totally understand one thing may not be for someone, but both mediums have some great stuff that I feel shouldn't be missed out on.
