I can’t tell you how gross it is for a male comic to hear the claim that women, including his female standup colleagues, are disgusted by his predatory words & behavior, and his response is to double down with a “fuck you, you pissed me off, here’s hopefully more pain for you!”
The shitty fans defending him is one thing. It’s another for your own peers to cheer this behavior on. A lot of women hear these stories and are reminded of their own abuse, and they’re watching their supposed friends defend the abuser.
I really think a lots of comics defending these powerful dudes right now are treating this like a game where they think this’ll blow over & it’ll be a “haha that was fun, no hard feelings” situation but don’t realize a lot of them are dead to many of their own female colleagues.
I’ve had more convos w/ female comedians than I ever had since starting comedy & we all notice who has responded in what way. A lot of these women have a ton of credits and have dedicated fan bases. Thinking these are just forgivable disagreements is really misreading the room.
Once again to anyone thinking I’m doing this to further my career. 1) Women don’t get booked MORE for speaking out. 2) I’ve already gotten booked everywhere I wanted so I don’t have a nefarious goal like dudes think I do. 3) I’m a lazy piece of shit & barely like having a career.
It’s just infuriating how bad at listening white men are. They see BLM protests & think “ppl just want free shit!” Women talking about their abuses: “they just wanna get booked!” They’re always accusing non white males of being disingenuous about legitimate grievances.
I’m a comedian at heart and it kills me not to be funny on purpose. It goes against every instinct I have. But this isn’t about a comic getting dragged over a joke. Real people are getting hurt and it’s not funny. Laughing about *everything all the time* is standup cult thinking.
Lastly I’m under no illusion that any man will lose any gig over tweets. These were more fair warnings to male comics who don’t realize they’re hurting colleagues they actually like and actively don’t know or care. Don’t be surprised when comedy returns & women are colder to you.
