Rebranding the Party as unionist will not save Scottish Labour.

People in Scotland now associate the Scottish Conservatives as the Party of the Union. In addition, there are other factors which have led to Scottish Labours downfall in recent years.
1. Jeremy Corbyn.

One of the main factors for Lab downfall is Corbyn. His far left political agenda turned people away and his inability to stand up for Scotland’s place in the union, lost them votes at recent elections.

ScotLab blindly followed Corbyn, when they should have
been strong in their union stance.

Also, Corbyn could only relate to those who identify as left wing. He had no interest in appealing to ‘floating voters’. Big mistake for someone who wanted to be Prime Minister.
2. Richard Leonard.

There’s no Punch without Judy. Leonard was essentially a by-product of Corbyn, who is also further to the left.

Leonard has no stage presence and although he might raise pertinent points in the chamber, his political opponents grab the headlines.
There’s credible Labour politicians sitting in Holyrood who could do a better job, but their reputation has been ruined, as they have failed to challenge and stand up to their own leadership team.

Leonard should have gone before 2021, to give the Party a fighting chance.
3. SNP

The SNP currently identify as centre left, but we all know they are a populist party.

The SNP has managed to relate to Lab supporters and this has contributed to their success in recent years. For reasons 1&2, Lab has failed to regain support of these former voters.
Before the SNP surge during the 2015 GE, Labour took Scotland for granted.

The SNP were aware of this and knew that if they proposed Labour-like policies, they could win.
4 The Union

There is an argument that unionists lose out when it comes to election voting, as there is 1 main separatist Party vs 3 main unionists. There is no doubt about, unionist votes are split and it is something I sympathise with, as the SNP capitalise on it.
Lab has been squeezed due to the strong performance of the Scottish Conservatives and Liberal Democrat’s (in some areas).

Lab also decided to drop Unionist branding when they were campaigning during elections and that could disassociate unionists with their Party.
It also doesn’t help when the current ScotLab Leader, Richard Leonard, wanted to hold a conference to discuss the Parties stance on the union.

The Party has managed to drive unionists away, as their position has been weak.
5. The Return of the Scottish Conservatives

There’s no doubt about it, the revival of the Scottish Conservatives has contributed to Labours downfall.

The Scottish Conservative Party now appeals to moderate Labour voters.
Also, due to Ruth Davidson’s Leadership, she managed to detoxify the Party.

The Scottish Conservatives now outperform Scottish Labour and have the best chance of taking on the SNP in 2021.
6. Moderates vs Lefties

Labour has a huge problem, as their moderate and far left members continually clash. They have been unable to find a Leader they can all unite under, which often leads to fall outs and people resigning from their Party.
ScotLab has a lot to work on. I’ve not even touched on their recent manifestos, and I have managed to point out huge flaws.

Unionist Parties must be strong to stand up against the SNP. But it’s clear, the only unionist Party worth voting for in Scotland, is the Tories.
