I don't play the Last of us, but its controversy has me wanting to bring up a topic that is important to me: Criticism and defense of media.

I personally think that some people way too often marginalize those who are critical of something in a very simplistic manner (thread)
We see this a lot. A movie or game, or show will come out and it will sometimes receive massive criticism. The ones who disagree with that criticism will often regulate the critics as "Just hating it because it's different."

I personally think that's overly simplistic and
honestly, it's not giving people enough credit and assuming they are dumber than they are. It's often not that simple. Most people don't hate different, they hate poorly-written different. And it's wrong to think people are not smart enough to know the difference.
Now don't get me wrong. There are those out there who are ignorant enough to look at things that aren't actually problems in a story as problems in the story, but don't lump all fans in with them. :)
Yes, not everyone is a professional writer or critic, but when something is met with almost universal disdain, it's at least worth looking into why that might be. It's not always just as simple as them not liking that the writer did something different.
For example, a lot of people who defend "The Last Jedi" will imply that those who do not simply hate change, or don't understand it.

I personally love the change it tries to implement but think it does a terrible job at doing it. And while I understood it, I feel its themes
overshadowed genuine good storytelling. See, not as simple as just hating it because it's different ^_^ I think it has some truly terrific ideas but simply fails as an overall movie regardless of them.
At the end of the day, sure, not everyone looks at things with a critical mind, but I think we as humans still consciously recognize what we think of as good or bad. So I don't know, I just really really hope that going forward we see people simplifying critique less.
It's not just black and white. They don't just dislike it cause it's different. Sure, that might sometimes be the case, but it's wrong to always put the media itself on a pedestal above the consumer. Give people more credit than that :) Fans can be nasty but some can also be
so passionate that they understand what works and what doesn't in the series that they love so much. Anyway, I rambled there, so sorry about that! Have a great day <3
I guess the bottom line is: Don't simplify critique of media :)
