Before I chat about the match, a few thoughts on the experience. It's been a very long time since I watched City on TV, not having Sky or BT. Robins TV? Wow, it's pretty bad. They don't do analysis do they? #BristolCity
It is the club's TV channel so what do I expect? From the very start, I've been against football resuming without fans. I stand by this. The game should have waited (however long). To my surprise, I quite liked fan noise being pumped through the tannoy. Fairly amusing.
And the cut outs of fans (which I would have turned my nose up at) was also a nice if surreal touch. Let's be honest, everything feels very strange right now.
The match? Poor. City, even worse. A pause of several months but the familiar failings still there (why would they suddenly vanish?). A midfield lacking spark or any creativity. Which means very few chances created, even fewer on target.
Strikers having to track back to retrieve the ball because the service is non-existent. Eliasson with a few nice bits of skill but then fades. O'Dowda - how does he make the match day squad let alone starting XI? Massengo - been a long time since that first exciting month.
Totally lost. Kalas - one good block aside, what a terrible season (for all sorts of reasons) he continues to have. Why leave out Dasilva? One of our best. Bentley - a wonderful first few months, then a liability and he continues to be one.
He's all over the place. Error-prone, lacking in confidence. Maenpaa (whilst not being as good a shot stopper) doesn't let you down. Reliable, commands his box. Minor knocks meant Fam only striker fully fit, but this was a turgid, conservative, unadventurous performance.
The one that we've seen time and time again this season. Let's not forget, disruption aside, this hasn't been a fun season for City. The football has been poor more often than not. Nothing's changed. The manager and his ideas certainly hasn't.
We're obviously not going to make the POs, but that was evident in February. Wider question for #BristolCity, would you actually want promotion this season? How would you feel not being there to witness our biggest achievement in decades, maybe ever?
A moot point because we won't be going up, and maybe a good season not to. Despite my misgivings, it's been hugely welcome having the footy back. Really is a great distraction.
