Thread on #FabiFlu tablets, potential cure for Covid-19 launched by #Glenmark.

Let's answer the key questions first.

Is this a new drug?

No. Favipiravir (Avigan as marketed) is manufactured by Fujifilm and has been in use in Japan since 2014 to treat novel influenza virus
Is this a game changer?

No. Favipiravir is one of the experimental anti viral drugs that helped treating ebola to some extent. Many countries are now doing clinical trials & some show favipiravir can help better than other drugs in treating mild & moderate symptoms of Covid19
What's the status in other countries?
Just like Trump pitched for hydroxychloroquine, Shinzo Abe pitched for Favipiravir and wanted the drug to be approved by May. But clinical trials in Japan did't yield the desired results and trials are still going on. But we approved already!
On the other hand, Russia claimed that it observed good results with more than 80% of patients with mild/moderate symptoms being recovered when treated with Favipiravir. Russia is currently supplying the tablets free of cost to the hospitals that are treating Civid-19 patients
Coming to India, with lot of media coverage and some channels claiming it to be a game changer, there is going to be huge demand for the drug. The questions arise:

1. A generic drug is supposed to cost a lot cheaper than branded ones, why each tablet costs 103 ₹?
2. Glenmark didn't invent the formula, they invested nothing in R&D of the drug. In Japan times, a Japanese scientist mentioned the daily dose of favipiravir should cost only about $1.45, the current price is way higher, what is the actual manufacturing cost?
