Real talk:

Municipally we have the least amount of money & provide the greatest amount of services.

We’re the front line of govt but have to cajole finances from ideologically driven levels of govts where logic doesn’t always reign in making decisions.

Something has to change.
Cities are where most ppl live and we represent about 8 cents on the tax dollar. The other 92% goes to provincial and federal coffers.

We basically beg for infrastructure dollars to serve our ppl.

Those often come with caveats and demands: PP3 or freeways - ribbon cuttings etc.
Provinces dictate what we can do through Municpal Government Acts.

Revenue is derived through property tax which never accounts for ups/down in the economy or your income.

We can’t go into deficit to cover for bad management (good), but also means we can’t cover for hard times.
It’s an unsustainable arrangement & if you really look at it -nonsense.

The MAJORITY of ppl live in urban centres but have the least amount of say in how their cities or towns are run through outdated laws.

It’s time for a little revolution here.

We need more say here at home.
Increasingly, the CITY is the STATE, but our revenue shares & divisions of power don’t recognize that.

It means that data driven & reality based decisions are left in the hands of people who are not governing at ground level.

I can tell you: it is frustratingly flabbergasting.
Homelessness, safety, crime reduction, health, innovation, economic responsiveness, innovation, diversification, prosperity, jobs and a thriving economy, and so on ...

We have SOLUTIONS for these but we have the least power and finances to move on them.

It borders on criminal.
But in the end, municipalities are left holding the bag just trying to fill potholes, clear snow, mow green spaces, and all the utilitarian needs AS WELL AS so much of the rest of the responsibilities the other orders of govt have reneged on that fall into their purview.
We pick up the pieces because someone has to.

But again, we don’t have the finances for it.

For all the missteps municipalities make, we also make dollars stretch further than you would believe, especially compared to our counterparts.
If it weren’t so opaque & complex, you would be protesting in the streets.

We have offered up tight, efficient plans to the province and the feds over and over again that would transform our communities, economies, & societies.

But there’s no political gain, so we are ignored.
This crosses party lines.

Some won’t like me saying this (don’t upset anyone!).

But you, the public, my neighbours - you should know and you should be mad.

Municipally, we do everything in our power to serve you but we are constrained by your other govts.

I will keep pushing.
(I know I said innovation twice in one sentence up there. My error but also - on point)
