THREAD: Why does no one ever talk about how Californians’ (and other large population states) are getting screwed by representation in the House of Representatives? The ”Great Compromise” brought together two plans. The New Jersey plan, aka the small state plan, became the
culmination of the Senate (two Representatives per state no matter population). The Virginia plan, aka the large state plan, became the culmination of the House of Representatives (representatives based on state population). But a little known law first adopted in 1911 (and made
permanent in 1929) limited the number of representatives to 435 to keep the number of representatives down. However, in today’s day and age of technology this should no longer be a concern. Wyoming’s population is 578,759 people. California’s population is 39.51 million - more
than 68 times the population of Wyoming. Yet California only has 53 members while Wyoming has 1. Why does this matter? California should not only have more representation in the House, but also should have more Electoral College votes. The Electoral College votes are based on the
number of congressmembers a state has. California should have had 15 more electoral college votes in 2016 than we actually did. Californians votes matter less in an election than they should.
