I’m proud to have BA after my name. I was drawn to an Arts degree because it matched my strengths and interests. My parents didn’t go to Uni. My eldest sister did. Dad, born in the 1920’s, thought she’d just get a job with the lovely ladies in our country town’s chemist.
Mum was born over a decade later. Dad was the most supportive father ever yet needed Mum’s vision and determination to enable us to go to Uni. Now all seven of their children have had the opportunity. The last sibling at the age of 50. Proud parents happy to share our successes.
Librarianship, teaching, team leadership. I studied history, Japanese, French - languages unlock the world. I understand the world is a complex place - the significance of culture - because of my studies. Cultures = workplaces = organisations = towns = cities. I’m curious.
HASS and STEMM? Of course, better together. Always has been, always will be. I took my BA, studied librarianship and got a job in a medical library. I was an expert medical librarian for 20 years. Helping clinicians make evidence based decisions to diagnose, treat, prevent...
I I used my humanities training to empathise and understand what the clinician was needing. I used my humanities training to think critically and fine tune the research question. I used my humanities training to critically appraise the information.
Humanities graduates are highly sought after and well paid. So high school students don’t be put off by the proposed rise in fees. Do what matches your strengths and interests. As a Director I look for motivation, resilience and empathy in employees. Communication and teamwork.
And you know a lot of those skills are learnt at home...and they’re the skills, along with, hard work that will get you to Uni and the opportunities to make a good living doing something that you’re good at and passionate about. Enjoy!
