so i had coffee with one of my bffs for life today who is a white dude in his 60s and is one of the most influential and connected people in Montana and it required a brunch tomorrow to finish our convo, but im gonna be processing for a while, but i have some thoughts...
before i start: to get anything at all done in this state, you have to work with Democrats & Republicans. that's a fact. also, the state is small so everyone knows everyone anyway, but you have to work with people with different ideologies to make anything at all happen.
1. community leaders are scared of this virus at all levels, no matter whp they are, they're scared we are doing the wrong thing as a country and their communities are going to be devastated.
2. i had a rich & powerful white man in his 60s talking to me about how he's examining his white privilege for the first time in his life.
ill have more thoughts on this later because there's a lot to process here but it means something. something big.

3. on to politics:
Steve Bullock is being universally praised for his handling of covid. people here are really happy with his leadership whether they say so publicly or not.

4. i played the biden ad for him. he said that the thing that really started to bother him about trump (just take a second and realize not everyone thinks like us, but these people influence voters so it's important for me to know) is that he makes everything about himself...
4. ctd ...he used the example of the Juneteenth tweet and said that it's become infuriating to him and his peers. he loved the ad because he said, "wow. he cares."
empathy is on the ballot.

5. Petty Politics Time:
he told me that he thinks Kamala is it. he didn't in the primaries, but for VP and after seeing some of her tv appearances, he now thinks she's ready on day one. haha he admitted i was right about her last year.

5. ctd... whew friends do people dislike how divisive Liz Warren was in the primaries. i cannot even repeat the language, but y'all wowza do moderate white folks just...dislike? her. i mean wow.
6. i told him he needs to listen more than he speaks because real leadership is understanding the people you're trying to lead.
that should be the model for leaders at every level of every organization.
just listen. now is the time.

7. ommmmgggg i missed talking at that intellectual level face to face (more than 6 ft apart outdoors no worries, id die if i got him sick) with someone whom i admire and who admires me.
Final thought for now:
America is changing. At all levels. And we are on the right side of history.

oh and i had to write this to begin processing so if you liked reading it, awesome! if you hated it, sorry not sorry. this was solely for me, but the points seem salient to a lot of my friends on here.
love y'all.
