Something for white folks to take away from Juneteenth, that applies to what you are doing right now. A SHORT THREAD:
Lincoln is praised for freeing enslaved people in our history books. Laws were written. Speeches were given - You know the American mythology, we all heard it and phoned-in the essay.
But for 2 more years after the Emancipation Proclomation, people were still enslaved in Texas until Union Army general Gordon Granger went down there and made sure laws and lip service were actually freeing people. Your reading has gotten you this far, yes?
What he found when he got to Texas were hundreds of thousands of people still enslaved. The proclamation meant nothing without follow through. See where I’m going with this?
Today, policies in companies and posts on Instagram are exactly that - proclamations.

But we need to step into our roles in life like we are going down to Texas to make sure it’s happening. Today.
Resistors will hold on, lie, cheat, steal, kill their way out of progress.

We have to hold our and others’ proclamations accountable every day, in all the power structures we participate in.

So Juneteenth too means something for white Americans. A reminder to not wait.
