You can't understand what's going on today without understanding "Cultural Marxism". The leftist movement on the streets, and in the "green rooms", boardrooms, and classrooms today is an outgrowth of the Cultural Marxist movement that has been building on the left for decades.
To simplify an encyclopedia worth of leftist theory, Marxism introduced the idea that the way to understand society was that of competing economic classes. For roughly 100 years, from the mid-1860's until the mid-1960's, the left fundamentally operated within this framework.
The basic point of leftism or all sorts was to advocate for the "oppressed" and "exploited" working classes against their "oppressors", the capitalist class. Whether it was reform or revolutionary, more libertarian or authoritarian, democratic or tyranical, it was "for" workers.
Things started to change in the 1960's however. There are 1001 reasons ranging from the civil rights movement to changes in the economy to the failures of communism and many more, but the result is that the left began to shift its focus from economic classes to cultural groups.
Whereas the economic left sought to either destory or reform capitalism for the benefit of the workers who were being exploited by it, today's left seeks to destroy or reform "white supremacy", "the patriarchy", etc., for the benefit of "marginalized" groups.
And to be clear, by targeting "white supremacy", "the patriarchy", etc., ultimately what the cultural Marxists are seeking to destroy is post-enlightenment Western culture, i.e. individualism, rule of law, rational inquiry, free expression, etc., i.e. (classical) "liberalism".
It's a powerful idea because like economic Marxism, there's a kernel of truth at the center of it: just as capitalism generates and reproduces significant economic class-based inequalities, liberalism generates and reproduces significant cultural group-based inequalities.
But it's also flawed in a similar manner: few serious thinkers today doubt that the economic inequalities generated by capitalism are a small price to pay for the freedom and prosperity that it brings to the many, especially as compared to all known alternatives.
And I'm 100% sure that sooner or later, nearly all serious thinkers will similarly conclude that the cultural inequalities generated by liberalism are a small price to pay for the freedom and prosperity that it brings to the many, especially as compared to all known alternatives.
But remember, the world had to endure 70 years of Soviet totalitarianism, fight and win a worldwide, decades-long Cold War, along with learning the hard way in countless places in nearly every society on Earth, and still economic Marxism remains a significant force in the word.
There's very little reason to believe that a Cold War 2.0 against Cultural Marxism won't be even more difficult. Whereas economic Marxism was dealt a near-mortal blow by the fall of the Soviet Union . . .
. . . Cultural Marxism has the Chinese Communist Party, the most richest and most powerful organization on Earth, behind it. Cultural Marxism has used liberalism's values of fairness and tolerance to infiltrate its most powerful cultural institutions.
Under the guise of "respect for diversity" and "multiculturalism", Cultural Marxists have taken over universities, media, education, public bureaucracies, and much else , using these institutions to subvert liberalism in favor of Cultural Marxism.
Cultural Marxism turns liberalism's highest ideals against it by using its rising cultural power to redefine terms in ways that George Orwell could not have dreamed. "Colorblindness" is the new "racism"; "anti-racism" means treating everyone completely differently based on race.
If we find that an aspirationally "blind" justice system produces unequal outcomes by cultural group ("mass incarceration"), even without specific evidence of bias, then that system is racist and must be destroyed and replaced by group-based justice and collective responsibility.
"Cancel culture" will move from individuals to symbols of Western culture to declaring illegitimate and targeting for destruction any principle of liberalism that produces any unequal outcome by cultural group, no matter how otherwise beneficial it might be.
"STEM" (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) is being cancelled because certain cultural groups are disproportionately underrepresented, with no thought to the effects doing so might have on our standards of living or even ability to defend ourselves from attack.
The nuclear family is targeted not only due to an unequal division of labor between men and women, but also the unequal advantage it confers upon groups that make disproportionately more use of it, while the threat that the loss of it would present to children is not considered.
There is literally no end to it. 500 years of human progress is under assault; the Cultural Marxists are literally the "barbarians at the gate" blazing a path of destruction through every institution and principle underlying the quality of life we now enjoy.
I do believe that we've already been in Cold War 2.0 for years now, but the intensity is mounting as China emerges as a more powerful force in the world, and the Cultural Marxist in America sense both the growing backlash to their hold on our institutions . . .
. . . and the growing opportunity presented by their growing numbers in every Western liberal democracy. We have to identify this enemy as soon as possible, and organize ourselves to fight it in every forum. Our prospects for future peace and prosperity truly depend on it.
