Hakka people moved into Hong Kong and other coastal areas because the Qing dynasty forced the Cantonese as well as Fujianese people to retreat from their coastal homes in the Great Clearance (遷界令) - this was to destroy the base of Ming loyalists in Taiwan/the coastal south

How insulting is it to say we aren’t Indigenous to the only place we are from? Our Sinicization happened as northern Han people came south fleeing the wars and dynastic shifts. The idea that the Southerners are “stubborn” and “rebellious” comes from this history. We resisted.

The idea of one “Han” group erases more than 100 dialects and distinct cultures. Many of us have never called ourselves Han until the last hundred years in the push for Chinese “national identity” - we retain culture, custom, religion, and language from our many ancestors.

Addressing the Bourgeoise claim... the majority of so called “Han” Hong Kongers are descended from labourers from the regions of Toishan, Foshan, Guangzhou and those surrounding areas of the Delta. Refugees. Poor folks. The colonized. Escaped coolies. People went there to work.

These same Cantonese people who arrived in Hong Kong provided the labour force (unwillingly usually) that worked on railways, mines, and other colonial projects in the Americas and other settler colonies. Our people have had our histories erased, scattered across oceans-

We were fucking colonized, our villages destroyed, forced to migrate to Hong Kong and other colonies out of necessity. But ask us where our ancestral villages are, and ask us who we are: we are native to the areas just north/west of Hong Kong. These are our ancestral homes.

I speak only for the Cantonese, not the many groups of people who have made Hong Kong their home. Other Sinitic people, Westerners, South Asians, Indonesians, Filipinos all call HK home. Hakkas have been here nearly as long as we have. We are descended from THE original people.

To this day, we refer to ourselves and our language as “Yue” (粵/越). Etymologically, this is the exact same word as “Viet” (越)- so if you’re going to attack our Indigenity, you are also attacking our southern sisters in Vietnam. “Viet Nam” (越南) literally means “Southern Yue”
