A year after I graduated High School in 2001, I gave up my political aspirations because I couldn’t be in politics and follow my conscience. I witnessed the sort of bargaining that was required to join the “club” and I was profoundly worried that I would become like them.
It was worse when I realized that our society’s challenges are deeper than politics. You can change a law, write a law, or win a court case, but these rules cannot change a populace. A virtuous people will make a unjust system better and a tepid society will degrade just laws.
I learned that people not only needed to know the Good, they needed to desire it. Sadly, people dont believe that the Good is good for them. They are not fools in this regard. By this time, I became Catholic and Catholics love crucifixes. We openly declare this is the Good.
This helped me see why so many Catholics claimed to want reform in the Church and new vocations and so few seemed to have the courage to act. We wanted reform in the Church and we wanted it to be legal rather than in our wills.

We do not believe that God actually cares for us.
Again, the Church holds a crucifix before the world and proclaim “This is your goal!” And people are rightly concerned. However, unlike every other power in the world, the Gospel is willing to tell the world this Truth.
I believe that our fear of the Cross makes us susceptible to the lie of a happiness without Truth and Bonum. To know that this is a lie is the painful act of freedom that we as Canadians need to make to renew our society.

Politicians can’t do it for us nor can our priests.
This isn’t just a Canadian problem. It is a human problem. Dostoevsky’s Inquisitor already articulated this means of oppression. It is an avoidance of freedom in the pursuit of happiness. However, Canada can be a microcosmic test to this fundamental human problem.
