The entrepreneurial journey isn’t an easy one — especially for the Indigenous community. In light of #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay tomorrow, we want to acknowledge the barriers facing this community.

The vast majority of Indigenous communities do not have a bank within their borders + due to current policies and legislation, land ownership on most Indigenous reserves is not permitted in Canada. With no collateral, banks are reluctant to provide loans.

Things like fast WiFi, reliable roads and airports are not common among remote Indigenous communities. These barriers make it difficult to travel and to create e-commerce stores.

Entrepreneurs based out of remote Indigenous communities have limited access to resources, like education, mentorship and skills training. Anti-Indigenous racism also contributes to the challenges that they face.
In spite of these challenges, Indigenous entrepreneurs are thriving. A study conducted by the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business (CCAB) found that 75% of Indigenous entrepreneurs reported earning a profit.
