Imma say something ppl may object to but
. Last night confederate statues were torn down by the people in Raleigh. I celebrated this but my spirit was vexed as I saw them being dragged down the street & then hung from a lamp post bc this too closely mirrors violence done to us.

I understsnd these were objects & not people but things have significance & are sites of emotional assignment despite their thingliness.
What does it mean when our imaginations allow us to engage in spectacle that pantomimes the violence we and our ancestors have endured?

I'm not against destruction. We need to break some things & tear other things down.
However, the vision of freedom I cling to doesn't require that we emulate the harm of our oppressors, not even performatively. We can dismantle, disrupt, & destroy without using their methods.

This isn't about respectability. I'm genuinely asking questions about what our imaginations bid us to do.
As we work for freedom, I want us to ask questions about what we do and why.
