#1 Israel XI 1-1 EFC - Feb 5, 1980. Gordon Lee took EFC to Israel for a money-spinning but ill-advised midweek friendly. Asa Hartford scored the only Blues goal. A tired Blues side made a 2300 mile journey back to Lpool, where they were beaten 0-4 at home by Ipswich 4 days later.
#2 Port Vale 0-2 EFC - July 30, 1980. The first pre-season game of Gordon Lee’s final season in charge saw the Blues make the short midweek trip across the Potteries to Vale Park. A brace from Bob Latchford brightened an overcast evening. Next up on the itinerary: Rotterdam!
#3 EFC 4-0 Excelsior - Aug 2, 1980. Pre-season stepped up a gear with a visit from a Rotterdam-based newly promoted Eredivisie side to Goodison. The Blues strolled to victory with goals from Peter Eastoe, Asa Hartford, Steve McMahon & Graeme Sharp. A trip to Marbella was next!

#5 Belenenses 1-4 EFC - Aug 10, 1980 - The final match of EFC’s pre-season & of their Spanish tour saw the Blues stroll to victory over a Portuguese side. Joe McBride, Gary Megson, Eamonn O’Keefe & George Telfer were the scorers.

#6 Halifax Town 0-0 EFC - May 12, 1981. Gordon Lee was sacked 6 days earlier. This was a post-season benefit match for Halifax defender Tony Geidmintis, who had been forced to retire through ill-health aged 31. More exciting times for EFC were about to commence at the months end.
#7 Japan XI 2-2 Everton - May 30, 1981. Howard Kendall’s first match as Everton’s newly appointed player-manager saw him take the team to the Far East for a post-season showpiece friendly tournament. Peter Eastoe & Imre Varadi were the Blues scorers in the first tournament match.
#8 China XI 0-1 Everton - Jun 4, 1981. Howard Kendall’s first win as an Everton manager, with Eamonn O’Keefe scoring the only goal. The Blues advanced to the knockout stages of the 6 team Kirin Cup tournament, where a semi final match vs Inter Milan was up next for the Blues.
#9 Inter Milan 4-1 EFC - Jun 6, 1981. The final match of the Blues post-season tour & participation in the Kirin Cup saw them fall to defeat to Internazionale. Trevor Ross scored the Blues only goal in Howard Kendall’s first loss as boss. EFC would not return to Japan until 1989.
#10 Morecambe 0-3 EFC - Aug 8, 1981. The 1st match of new EFC player-manager Howard Kendalls 1st pre-season saw the Blues victorious. Two goals from Peter Eastoe & a goal from Kendall himself (his 1st EFC goal since 1973 & his final ever goal for EFC) delighted the visiting fans.
#11 Plymouth Argyle 1-1 EFC - Aug 12, 1981. Howard Kendall took his Blues squad down to the South West of England for a mini two match tour. The first game played saw the Blues draw 1-1 with Plymouth, with striker ‘Big’ Mick Ferguson on the scoresheet for the Blues.
#12 Exeter City 0-0 EFC - Aug 14, 1981. EFC concluded their pre-season tour of the south west with an uneventful 0-0 draw. Here’s a copy of the teamsheet from that day. 5 of Kendall’s summer signings feature: Southall, Ferguson, Thomas, Ainscow & Alan Biley- misspelt as ‘Barey’.
#13 Hereford United 1-1 EFC - Aug 17, 1981. The Blues took a trip to Edgar Street to face Frank Lord’s Bulls under the lights. A 1-1 draw saw Alan Biley notch his first goal for the Blues, who were now 12 days away from the season’s 1st league game vs Birmingham City at Goodison.
#14 Oldham Athletic 2-2 EFC - Aug 22, 1981. One week before the start of the season saw Howard Kendall take his side to Boundary Park to face the Latics. A 2-2 draw ensued, with both Steve McMahon & Mick Ferguson coming close to sealing a win for the visiting Blues.
#15 Lancaster City 0-5 EFC -Aug 25, 1981. A morale-boosting final pre-season game win. Paul Lodge, Eamonn OKeefe, Trevor Ross, Graeme Sharp & Gerry Mullan all on target. Mullan never made a 1st team EFC appearance & was sold to Glentoran but was later capped 4 times by N.Ireland.
#16 Glasgow Rangers 1-1 EFC - Nov 15, 1981. With the Blues sitting 12th in the table, they took advantage of an international weekend to venture north of the border for veteran Rangers defender Colin Jackson’s testimonial. Graeme Sharp scored EFC’s only goal in a draw at Ibrox.
#17 Vale Recreation 0-7 EFC - Feb 8, 1982. EFC travelled to Guernsey for a friendly to celebrate Vale Recreation’s Golden Jubilee. A 13yr old Matt Le Tissier was on the home team’s books. Hat-tricks from Mick Ferguson & Graeme Sharp, plus a goal from Brian Borrows sealed the win.
#18 Wrexham 0-1 EFC - Mar 17, 1982. The Blues headed to the Racecourse Ground on St Patrick’s Day, for the testimonial of Wrexham legend Graham Whittle. EFC ran out 1-0 winners, through a goal by youngster Mark Leonard.
#19 Tranmere Rovers 1-1 EFC - May 10, 1982. The Blues headed to Prenton Park for the testimonial of Tranmere’s stalwart goalkeeper, Dickie Johnson. A good natured affair saw Johnson score Tranmere’s goal, a penalty, in a 1-1 draw.
#20 Lokeren 4-3 EFC - July 31, 1982. The 1st game of Howard Kendall’s 2nd pre-season in charge saw EFC head to Belgium for a 2 game tour. EFC fell to a 3-4 defeat to Belgian hosts, Lokeren, with 2 goals from Graeme Sharp & 1 from Adrian Heath bright spots in an entertaining game.
#21 EFC 2-1 Genoa - Aug 1, 1982. Match 2 of the Blues’ two match pre-season tour of Belgium saw Everton defeat Italian Serie A side, Genoa 2-1. Goals from Graeme Sharp & Steve McMahon sealed the Blues first pre-season win.

#22 Witton Albion 0-5 EFC - Aug 7, 1982. Back on UK soil & a stroll in the park for the Blues vs non-leaguers from Northwich. The win was sealed with 2 goals from Graeme Sharp & 1 each from Mark Leonard, Kevin Richardson & Andy King - King scoring his 1st since returning to EFC.
#23 Plymouth Argyle 2-4 EFC - Aug 13, 1982. The Blues headed to Home Park, for a pre-season friendly against the Pilgrims. EFC won 4-2 with 2 goals from David Johnson & 1 each from Graeme Sharp & Kevin Sheedy. Both Johnson & Sheedy had been summer signings from Liverpool.
#24 Bournemouth 3-4 EFC - Aug 16, 1982. EFC’s pre-season tour of the South Coast continued, with a trip to Dean Court to face the Cherries. EFC’s free-scoring form continued, scoring 4 goals for the 2nd consecutive game. Sharp with 2 & Heath & Sheedy with 1 each sealed the win.
#25 Wigan Athletic 1-6 EFC - Aug 20, 1982. Kendall’s high-scoring Blues made a short trip to Springfield Park to thrash newly-promoted Div 3 newcomers Wigan. Two goals from Graeme Sharp (10 goals in pre-season for him), plus 1 each for Heath, Irvine, King & Sheedy sealed the win.
#26 Northwich Victoria 1-3 EFC - Aug 24, 1982. EFCs final pre-season game was a testimonial for Northwich Victoria’s goalkeeping legend Dave Ryan @dr0524 The Blues defeated the non-leaguers 3-1, with goals from Mick Ferguson, Mark Leonard & 17yr old youth striker Mark Farrington.
#27 Hamrun Spartans 0-0 EFC - Nov 14, 1982. The weekend after the infamous 0-5 derby at Goodison, & after 2 draws vs Arsenal in the Milk Cup & League, Kendall took an EFC XI to Malta for an invitational game to celebrate the Spartans 75th anniversary. A 0-0 draw ensued.
#28 Dundee United 1-1 EFC - Apr 15, 1983. With EFC’s home game vs Man Utd postponed due to Utd’s participation in the FA Cup semi finals, the Blues took a trip to Tannadice Park for a Friday night friendly vs Dundee United. A 1-1 draw saw Kevin Sheedy score EFC’s only goal.
#29 Bangor City 1-4 EFC - May 11, 1983. The Blues took a midweek trip to Wales to play Bangor City. Curiously at this time, Bangor played in the English 5th tier, just outside the Football League. EFC won via 2 goals from youngster Ian Bishop & 1 each from Ratcliffe & Sheedy.
#30 Port Vale 1-2 EFC - May 16, 1983. With EFC finishing 7th, their highest league finish for 4yrs, the 1st of 2 post-season friendlies took place. EFC travelled to Vale Park to face newly promoted from Division 4 Port Vale & won 2-1, with goals from David Johnson & Graeme Sharp.
#31 Blackburn Rovers 2-0 EFC - May 18, 1983. EFCs final post-season friendly was Blackburn legend Tony Parkes testimonial. Parkes was Mr Blackburn, spending 34yrs at BRFC. Caretaker-boss 6 times, he was given another testimonial in 2005. Sadly hes now battling Alzheimers disease.
#32 Telford 0-3 EFC - Aug 3, 1983. EFCs 1st pre-season game in 1 of the most pivotal seasons in the club’s history saw them face Telford Utd at Bucks Head. EFC would famously face them at Goodison 18 months later in the FA Cup. Here goals from Heath, King & Irvine sealed victory.
#33 Walsall 0-3 EFC - Aug 6, 1983. Amazingly, EFCs second pre-season match of the summer was a replica of the first, albeit against Football League opposition in Walsall. A 3-0 win for the Blues, with the exact same scorers again in Adrian Heath, Andy King & Alan Irvine.
#34 Haarlem 1-3 EFC - Aug 9, 1983. Howard Kendall took the team on 3 match tour of Holland. In the first game, the Blues triumphed 3-1 over Haarlem, with goals from Graeme Sharp, Kevin Sheedy & Kevin Richardson.
#35 Dordrecht 0-0 EFC (Dordrecht won 4-3 on pens) - Aug 11, 1983. The second match of the Blues’ 3 match tour of Holland was an unremarkable affair. Dordrecht were fresh off promotion to the Dutch top flight Eredivisie Division. A drab 0-0 draw saw EFC lose 3-4 on pens.
#36 Groningen 2-2 EFC - Aug 14, 1983. The final match of the Blues’ 3 match tour of Holland saw EFC take on a Dutch side that would go on to knock Atletico Madrid out of the UEFA Cup the following month. Goals from Alan Harper & David Johnson earned the Blues a decent 2-2 draw.
#37 Oldham Athletic 0-2 EFC - Aug 19, 1983. Howard Kendall’s Blues made a Friday night trip to face Joe Royle’s Latics at Boundary Park. Goals from Peter Reid & youngster Stuart Rimmer gave EFC victory. 8 days away from the start of one of the most pivotal seasons in EFC history.
#38 Linfield 0-5 EFC -Oct 10 1983. An international break saw EFC fly to N.Ireland for Peter Dornan’s testimonial. EFC won 5-0 w/ goals from Adrian Heath, Peter Reid, Graeme Sharp & 2 from triallist, David Byrne. Blues didnt sign him & he went on to have nomadic lower lge career.
#39 Tranmere Rovers 1-2 EFC - May 23, 1984. Four days after winning the FA Cup at Wembley, EFC travelled to Prenton Park for the testimonial of Tranmere legend Ray Mathias. A bumper crowd saw the FA Cup winners EFC victorious 2-1, with goals from Graeme Sharp & Trevor Steven.
#40 Servette 1-1 EFC (EFC won 3-2 on pens) - Aug 6, 1984. Pre-season commenced with Howard Kendall taking the Blues to Switzerland to participate in a 4 team tournament. 1st match saw EFC draw 1-1 with Swiss side Servette - Peter Reid scoring the only goal before EFC won on pens.
#41 Botafogo 1-0 EFC - Aug 7, 1984. EFCs 2nd pre-season game in 48hrs saw them lose 0-1 to Botafogo. The Brazilian side boasted the likes of AlemĂŁo, who later won the UEFA Cup & Serie A with Napoli, & RaĂ­, who later won the 1994 World Cup with Brazil & the ECWC with PSG in 1996.
#42 St Gallen 0-1 EFC - Aug 9, 1984. Howard Kendall’s Blues’ 3rd pre-season game on their tour of Switzerland - their 3rd game in 4 days - saw them defeat Swiss side St Gallen 1-0, with a goal from Andy Gray.
#43 Olympiakos 0-3 EFC - Aug 13, 1984. The Blues continued their pre-season tour of the continent with a trip to Greece. EFC swept aside the previous season’s Greek Super League runners up 3-0, with 2 goals from Adrian Heath & 1 from Trevor Steven. Next up was the Charity Shield.
#44 FC Sion 3-2 EFC - Sep 9, 1984. Kendall took EFC back to Switzerland for a midweek friendly. Swiss side Sion won 3-2, with Sharp notching 2 goals for EFC. Peter Reid & Colin Harvey picked up the Shareholders Player of the Yr & Dixie Dean award respectively on the same night.
#45 Wigan Athletic 1-4 EFC - Jul 27, 1985. After the greatest season in EFC history, EFC started 1985/86 pre-season with a 4-1 win over Wigan. Graeme Sharp, Paul Bracewell, Trevor Steven & Gary Lineker were all on the scoresheet. This was Lineker’s EFC debut, delighting EFC fans.
#46 INEX Canada XI 1-1 EFC - Jul 31, 1985. Howard Kendall took the reigning English Champions for a pre-season tour in Canada. In the first of 2 games, the Blues drew 1-1 with INEX Canada XI (a special select side), with a now fit-again Adrian Heath scoring for EFC.
#47 Canada 0-1 EFC - Aug 4, 1985. The 2nd game of EFCs pre-season tour of Canada saw the Blues beat the Canadian national team 1-0 with a goal from Gary Lineker. Uniquely Lineker would also face Canada again in May 1986 playing for England in another 1-0 win in a pre-WC friendly.
#48 Crewe Alexandra 1-2 EFC - Aug 7, 1985. Back on UK soil, EFC headed to Gresty Road for a pre-season friendly. A 2nd string EFC side won 2-1, with goals from Adrian Heath & Rob Wakenshaw. Three days later the Blues were back at Wembley for the Charity Shield game vs Man Utd.
#49 Liverpool 2-3 EFC - Aug 12, 1985. Fresh off defeating Man Utd 2-0 in the Charity Shield at Wembley, the Blues headed to Anfield for Phil Neal’s testimonial. An entertaining game saw EFC run out 3-2 winners, with 2 goals from Adrian Heath & 1 goal from Derek Mountfield.
#50 Werder Bremen 0-0 EFC (Bremen won 7-6 on pens) - Aug 1, 1986. EFC headed to Germany & Holland for pre-season, participating in a 4 team tournament in Rotterdam. The 1st game saw them draw 0-0 with last season’s Bundesliga runners up, Werder Bremen, only to lose 7-6 on pens.
#51 Santos 1-2 EFC - Aug 3, 1986. EFCs 2nd game in the Rotterdam AD Toernooi pre-season tournament saw them beat Brazilian side Santos 2-1 with goals from Adrian Heath & Trevor Steven. A ticket from this match can be seen below. Admission cost ÂŁ6.40 to see this & Werder/Feyenoord
#52 VFL Bochum 0-2 EFC - Aug 5, 1986. The Blues’ third pre-season match saw them take on West German side VFL Bochum. EFC were victorious 2-0, with goals from Neil Adams & Paul Wilkinson.
#53 Roda JC 1-1 EFC - Aug 8, 1986. EFC travelled to Holland for the Blues 4th pre-season match, taking part in a 5 team DSM Cup tournament. The first tournament match saw them draw 1-1 with Dutch side, Roda JC. Graeme Sharp scoring the Blues’ only goal.
#54 Fortuna Sittard 2-4 EFC - Aug 10, 1986. EFC’s 5th pre-season match & their 2nd match in the DSM Cup tournament saw them take on their previous 1984/85 ECWC opponents Fortuna Sittard. The Blues won 4-2 with 2 goals from Kevin Sheedy & 1 each from Adrian Heath & Trevor Steven.
#55 Manchester City 1-4 EFC - Aug 19, 1986. EFCs final pre-season friendly saw them head to Maine Road for the testimonial of one of their new signings, Paul Power. Power had just left City after 11yrs. EFC won 4-1 with 2 goals from Paul Wilkinson & 1 each from Sheedy & Aspinall.
#56 Bordeaux 1-2 EFC - Feb 10, 1987. A free midweek saw Howard Kendall take EFC to France for an international friendly against the team that would win the French title at the end of the season & reach next seasons European Cup 1/4 finals. EFC won 2-1 w/goals from Heath & Snodin.
#57 Blackpool 2-3 EFC - May 18, 1987. Fresh off winning a 9th league title, champions EFC headed to Blackpool for EFC old boy Eamonn O’Keefes testimonial. EFC won 3-2 with goals from John Ebbrell, Neil Pointon & a Blackpool own goal. Beforehand Red Rose Radio took on EFC legends.
#58 Canterbury XI 0-3 EFC - May 30, 1987. EFC started their 3 game post-season tour of Australia & New Zealand with a match vs a Canterbury XI in Christchurch, New Zealand in the Winfield Super Series. EFC won 3-0, with goals from Adrian Heath, Derek Mountfield & Trevor Steven.
#59 Auckland XI 1-2 EFC - Jun 1, 1987. EFCs post-season tour continued with a 2nd match, this one at the Sound Plus National Auckland Mount Smart Stadium vs an Auckland XI, again in the Winfield Super Series tournament. EFC won 2-1, with goals from Dave Watson & Trevor Steven.
#60 Australia 1-1 EFC (Australia won 4-1 on pens) - Jun 3, 1987. The final match of Howard Kendall’s first reign as EFC manager saw EFC draw 1-1 with the Australian national team, before losing 1-4 on pens. Adrian Heath scored EFCs only goal. Part 1:

#61 Wrexham 0-3 EFC - Jul 25, 1987. A new era began as Colin Harvey took charge of his first match as EFC manager. The Blues headed to the Racecourse Ground & beat Division 4 Wrexham 3-0, with goals from Wayne Clarke, Graeme Sharp & Ian Snodin.
#62 Linköping 1-4 EFC - Jul 28, 1987. A training week in Sweden saw EFC take on Linköping. EFC won 4-1, with 2 goals from Graeme Sharp & 1 each from Ian Marshall & Ian Snodin. EFC headed back to England for the Charity Shield match at Wembley vs Coventry City 4 days later.
#63 Benfica 0-0 EFC (Benfica won 5-3 on pens)- Aug 8, 1987. Following the Charity Shield win at Wembley EFC travelled to Spain to play in a 4 team Trofeo De Futbol Teresa Herrera tournament featuring Benfica, Sporting Gijon & Deportivo. EFC drew 0-0 v Benfica, losing 3-5 on pens.
#64 Sporting Gijon 2-1 EFC - Aug 9, 1987. The final day of the ‘Trofeo De Futbol Teresa Herrera’ tournament saw the Blues lose 1-2 in a 3rd/4th place play-off match to Spanish side, Sporting Gijon. Trevor Steven scored EFCs only goal.
#65 Real Madrid 6-1 EFC - Aug 26, 1987. A midweek trip to Madrid in a friendly for the Santiago Bernabéu Trophy saw an EFC side missing Southall, Steven, Stevens, Van Den Hauwe, Reid & Sharp well beaten by Real Madrid. Ian Marshall scored EFCs only goal.
#66 Hearts 1-1 EFC - Oct 18, 1987. The day after the Blues drew 1-1 away at Newcastle Utd in the league, Colin Harvey took the team to Tynecastle to play Hearts in a testimonial match for Hearts legend Walter Kidd. A spirited 1-1 draw saw Wayne Clarke score EFCs only goal.
#67 Beitar Jerusalem 1-1 EFC - Nov 3, 1987. EFC took advantage of an international break by making their 1st trip to Israel in over 7yrs for a midweek friendly. The game saw the Israeli champs borrow Bobby Mimms for the match! Gary Stevens scored for EFC. Colin Harvey explains:
#68 Glasgow Rangers 2-2 EFC (Rangers won 8-7 on pens) - Dec 8, 1987. The English Champs took on Scottish Champs in Dubai for the Dubai Champions Cup (the British Championship). Sheedy & Watson scored for EFC in normal time, before Rangers won on penalties.
#69 Leeds Utd Select XI 3-2 EFC - Apr 12, 1988. A joint testimonial for Leeds greats John Charles & Bobby Collins (latter also played for EFC). Dalglish, Rush (who scored a hat trick) & Platini played for Leeds. Adrian Heath & Neil Adams scored for EFC.
#70 Cruzeiro 1-2 EFC - Aug 3, 1988. The start of Colin Harvey’s 2nd pre-season as EFC boss saw him take the team to Switzerland for a two match tour. The first match saw the Blues defeat Brazilian side Cruzeiro 2-1 in Berne, with goals from Graeme Sharp & Dave Watson.
#71 Torino 2-2 EFC (Torino won 4-3 on pens) - Aug 5, 1988. EFCs 2nd pre-season game in Switzerland saw them draw 2-2 with Italian side Torino, before losing 3-4 on pens. Tony Cottee scored his first goal for EFC, alongside Graeme Sharp. Footage from the game shown on Sky below.

Tony Cottee popped up to score & draw Everton level, making it Torino 2-2 Everton, which is how it finished. Torino went on to win 4-3 on penalties.

#72 FC Chur 1-6 EFC - Aug 7, 1988. The final match of EFCs pre-season tour of Switzerland saw them defeat local Swiss side FC Chur 6-1, in a match to mark their 75th anniversary. Six different EFC players were on the scoresheet: Adams, Clarke, Ebbrell, McCall, Nevin & Watson.
#73 Drogheda United Select XI 0-1 EFC - Aug 12, 1988. The Blues made the short trip to Ireland to play a Drogheda United Select XI in a match to mark their upcoming 70th anniversary. EFC triumphed 1-0, with a goal from Trevor Steven.
#74 Tranmere Rovers 0-3 EFC - Aug 17, 1988. EFC provided the opposition for Tranmere, for the testimonial of Tranmere legend & future manager Ronnie Moore. A bumper Prenton Park crowd saw EFC win 3-0, with 2 goals from Tony Cottee & 1 goal from Pat Nevin.
#75 Real Madrid 2-0 EFC - Aug 20, 1988. This match was held at Spanish 3rd tier side Racing de Santander FC’s new stadium, as part of the celebrations to open the new 22000 capacity stadium in Northern Spain. Full highlights of the match can be seen below:

#76 Athletic Bilbao 3-2 EFC - Aug 23, 1988. EFCs second match in Spain & their final match of pre-season saw them face Howard Kendall’s Athletic Bilbao side. An entertaining game saw Kendall’s Spanish side win 3-2. Goalscorers for EFC were Tony Cottee & Graeme Sharp.

#78 Tranmere Rovers 0-1 EFC - Jul 28, 1989. The first match of Colin Harvey’s 3rd pre-season in charge saw the Blues travel to Prenton Park to provide the opposition for Tranmere legend Steve Mungall’s testimonial. A bumper crowd saw EFC win 1-0 with a goal from Stuart McCall.
#79 EFC 3-1 Man Utd - Aug 2, 1989. EFC returned to Japan for the first time in 8yrs to play in a 3 team ‘Mitsubishi World Soccer 89 Cup’ involving Man Utd & the Japan national team. In the 1st game, EFC beat Utd 3-1, with goals from Sheedy, Pointon & new signing Norman Whiteside.
#80 EFC 3-1 Japan -Aug 4, 1989. EFC won the Mitsubishi World Soccer 89 Cup by defeating the Japan national team 3-1 in Nagoya with goals from Graeme Sharp, Mike Newell & John Ebbrell. Despite Man Utd beating Japan 1-0 3 days later EFCs prior win over Utd meant EFC lifted the cup.
#81 Thailand XI 0-3 EFC - Aug 8, 1989. EFC’s great pre-season tour of Asia continued with a trip to Thailand to play the Thai national side. The Blues triumphed 3-0, with two goals from Graeme Sharp & one goal from Tony Cottee.
#82 Malaysia XI 0-0 EFC (EFC won 4-2 on pens) - Aug 11, 1989. The final match of a terrific pre-season saw EFC end their tour of Asia with a 4-2 penalty shoot out win over a Malaysian XI after a 0-0 draw. This meant 5 wins out of 5, EFC best pre-season form of the entire decade.
#83 Stoke City 2-4 EFC - Sep 11, 1989. The Blues took a trip to the Victoria Ground to play Stoke City in a testimonial for Stoke’s veteran goalkeeper, Peter Fox. EFC ran out 4-2 winners, with 2 goals from Mike Newell, 1 goal from Dave Watson & a Stoke City own goal.
#84 Hereford United 0-4 EFC - Nov 27, 1989. EFC played Hereford Utd in a testimonial for veteran defender Mel Pejic (brother Mike played for EFC in the 1970s). 2 goals from Tony Cottee & 1 each from Mike Newell & Kevin Sheedy gave EFC victory. Mel later became physio at Bolton.
#85 EFC 0-0 PSV Eindhoven - Dec 6, 1989. EFCs final 1980s friendly was a midweek affair at Goodison. This match was held to commemorate the installation of EFCs new floodlights, powered by Dutch electronics giants Philips. Fittingly the opponents were Philips-owned PSV Eindhoven.
#86 Cheltenham Town 1-0 EFC - Apr 30, 1990. EFC’s first friendly match of the 1990s saw them face Cheltenham Town in a joint testimonial for the Robins duo, Nick Jordan and Ray Baverstock. Cheltenham won 1-0 but the match is unique for @NevilleSouthall playing for Cheltenham!

#87 Bradford City All Stars 1-0 EFC - May 1, 1990. EFC travelled to Valley Parade to face Bradford City All Stars XI in a testimonial match for Bradfords Mark Ellis. Bradfords scorer is unknown but there was an attendance of 4,387. Thanks to the lads @BantamTalk for this info.đŸ‘đŸ»
#88 Wigan Athletic 2-3 EFC - May 6, 1990. EFC visited Springfield Park to provide the testimonial opposition in a match for Wigan defender Alex Cribley. The Blues won 3-2. Cribley now works at Wigan as a physiotherapist.
#89 China Olympic XI 0-2 EFC - May 10, 1990. A mini post-season tour of the Far East saw the Blues take on a China Olympic XI for the NEC Cup in the Xian Longtan Stadium in Beijing. EFC won 2-0, with goals from Tony Cottee & Mike Newell.
#90 Hong Kong Invitational XI 2-2 EFC (Hong Kong won 3-1 on pens)-May 14, 1990. The final game of EFCs post-season Far East tour saw EFC take on a Hong Kong Invitational XI in the Government Stadium. Goals from Pat Nevin & a HK own goal saw EFC draw 2-2 before losing 1-3 on pens.
#91 Cork City 0-3 EFC - Aug 1, 1990. Harvey’s final pre-season as boss saw him take EFC on a tour of Ireland. First up were Cork City. EFC won 3-0 with goals from Cottee, Watson & a penalty from Kevin Sheedy who received a heroes welcome after his Italia 90 exploits. @CorkEverton
#92 Athlone Town 1-5 EFC - Aug 3, 1990. EFC’s pre-season tour of Ireland continued with a convincing 5-1 win over Athlone Town. Mike Newell scored twice, whilst both Kevin Sheedy & Dave Watson scored for the second successive game. John Ebbrell grabbed the 5th goal.
#93 EFC 2-1 Swindon Town - Aug 5, 1990. EFC’s tour of Ireland continued with a match vs Swindon Town in Dublin. Swindon had won the Div 2 play off final in May, but had been denied promotion due to financial irregularities. EFC won 2-1, with goals from Tony Cottee & Mike Newell.
#94 Linfield 0-2 EFC - Aug 7, 1990. The final match of EFC’s pre-season tour of Northern & Republic of Ireland saw them travel to Windsor Park in Belfast to face Northern Irish giants, Linfield. EFC won 2-0, with goals from Mike Newell & John Ebbrell.
#95 Fulham 2-2 EFC - Aug 13, 1990. The Blues took a trip to Craven Cottage to provide the opposition in a joint testimonial for Fulham legends, Peter Scott & John Marshall. EFC drew 2-2 with Fulham, with EFC’s goals coming from John Ebbrell & a Neil McDonald penalty.
#96 Galatasaray 1-3 EFC - Aug 15, 1990. The Blues visited Istanbul in Turkey for a tough-looking pre-season friendly & triumphed 3-1, with 2 goals from Pat Nevin & 1 goal from Graeme Sharp.
#97 Tranmere Rovers 1-2 EFC - Aug 17, 1990. For a 3rd pre-season in a row EFC visited Prenton Park, this time for Tranmere legend Johnny King’s testimonial. EFC won 2-1, with goals from Ray Atteveld & Norman Whiteside. Whiteside would only start one more EFC game before retiring.
#98 Celtic 2-2 EFC - Aug 19, 1990. The Blues’ final pre-season friendly saw them take a trip north of the border to Parkhead, to face Celtic in what was billed as a ‘challenge match’. An entertaining 2-2 draw ensued, with Mike Newell scoring both of EFCs goals.
#99 Ards 2-5 EFC - Jan 15, 1991. Howard Kendall returned to EFC as boss in Nov 1990. The 1st friendly of the ‘Kendall 2’ era saw EFC go to Northern Ireland to face Ards in a match to mark the opening of their new stand. EFC won 5-2 with 3 goals from Cottee & 2 goals from Beagrie.
#100 Barnstaple Town 0-2 EFC - Feb 5, 1991. Howard Kendall took the Blues to Devon for an unlikely midweek friendly against non-league Barnstaple Town. EFC ran out 2-0 winners with goals from Mike Newell & youngster Marcus Ebdon.

#102 Shamrock Rovers 1-4 EFC - May 17, 1991. The Blues final post-season friendly match was for the Royal Liver Assurance Cup. EFC headed to Ireland to face Shamrock Rovers & triumphed 4-1, with 2 goals each from Kevin Sheedy & young striker Stuart Barlow.
#103 Strasbourg 1-1 EFC - Jul 13, 1991. Howard Kendall’s 1st pre-season in his 2nd reign as boss saw it start with a friendly against French side Strasbourg. EFC drew 1-1, with Dave Watson scoring EFC’s only goal. Two days after this EFC sold Mike Milligan to Oldham for £600,000.
#104 Yverdon-Sport 0-1 EFC - Jul 14, 1991. The first of 4 pre-season games in Switzerland saw the Blues take on Swiss side Yverdon-Sport. EFC triumphed 1-0 with a goal from Stuart Barlow. Future players for Yverdon-Sport would include both Alex Nyarko & Djibril Cissé.
#105 Bulle 0-1 EFC - Jul 16, 1991. The Blues pre-season tour of Switzerland continued with a match against local side Bulle. EFC won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Mike Newell. Newell would be sold to Blackburn 4 months later to finance the arrival of Mo Johnston from Rangers.
#106 Klus Balsthal 0-3 EFC - Jul 19, 1991. The 3rd game of the Blues pre-season tour of Switzerland saw them win 3-0 against another local Swiss side, Klus Balsthal. Two goals from Pat Nevin & one goal from Peter Beagrie gave the Blues victory.
#107 Delemont 1-7 EFC - Jul 20, 1991. The final game of the Blues pre-season tour of Switzerland saw them thrash local Swiss side Delemont 7-1. Stuart Barlow scored a hat-trick for the Blues, whilst Peter Beagrie, John Ebbrell, Pat Nevin & Mike Newell were also on the scoresheet.
#108 Glentoran 0-6 EFC -Aug 3, 1991. EFC headed to Belfast for Glentoran legend Tommy Jackson’s testimonial, who also won a Div 1 winners medal with EFC in 1970. EFC won 6-0 with goals from Peter Beardsley, Stuart McCall, Mike Newell, Kevin Sheedy, Robert Warzycha, & Eddie Youds.
#109 Tranmere Rovers 1-3 EFC - Aug 6, 1991. For a 4th pre-season in a row EFC headed to Prenton Park for the annual friendly v Tranmere. For the 4th pre-season in a row EFC ran out winners, this time 3-1. Goals from Cottee, Sheedy, & a Steve Mungall own goal handed EFC victory.
#110 EFC 3-0 Gornik Zabrze -Aug 10, 1991. A rare pre-season home friendly for EFC. EFC had bought Robert Warzycha from Polish side Gornik Zabrze earlier in the year & this friendly at Goodison Park was part of the deal. EFC won 3-0 with goals from Beardsley, Cottee & Hinchcliffe.
#111 Real Sociedad 0-0 EFC (Real Sociedad won 8-7 on penalties)- Aug 13, 1991. EFC headed back to the Basque country in Spain, (an area Howard Kendall knew well after managing Atletico Bilbao) for EFCs final pre-season friendly. EFC drew 0-0 before losing a penalty shoot out 7-8.
#112 Derry City 0-0 EFC - Feb 13, 1992. The Blues took advantage of an international break & headed to back to Northern Ireland for a midweek friendly vs Derry City at the Brandywell Stadium. An uneventful goalless draw took place.
#113 Man Utd 2-4 EFC - May 3, 1992. EFC headed to Old Trafford to play Man Utd in a testimonial for Norman Whiteside, who had retired through injury aged 26. EFC won 4-2 with 2 goals from Mark Ward, 1 from Peter Beardsley & 1 from triallist John Esin. EFC opted not to sign Esin.
#114 Hasper SV 1-1 EFC - Jul 17, 1992. Howard Kendall took the Blues to Germany for a pre-season tour. First up was a match against Hasper SV. EFC drew 1-1, with Peter Beagrie scoring the Blues only goal.

#118 Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 EFC - Jul 26, 1992. A rare pre-season defeat for the Blues, their first in nearly 4 years, in the final match of their pre-season tour of Germany. Tony Cottee scored EFCs only goal in a match played at the old Bökelbergstadion in Monchengladbach.
#119 Woking 1-4 EFC - Aug 1, 1992. A trip to Surrey for EFC as they took on non-leaguers Woking. The Blues had famously faced them in the FA Cup 18 months earlier. EFC ran out winners that day & did so again here, this time 4-1. Beardsley, Ebbrell, Ward & Warzycha scored for EFC.

#121 EFC 1-0 Borussia Monchengladbach - Aug 8, 1992. Just 13 days after playing Monchengladbach in Germany, EFC played a return friendly at Goodison to mark 100 years of Goodison Park. EFC won 1-0, Peter Beardsley scoring the only goal for the Blues.
#122 Tranmere Rovers 1-1 EFC - Aug 11, 1992. EFC headed to Prenton Park to play the now annual friendly vs Tranmere. This was the 5th season in a row it had taken place, and the first time EFC hadn’t beaten them. A 1-1 draw ensued, with Stuart Barlow scoring EFCs only goal.
#123 Liverpool 2-2 EFC - Oct 10, 1992. EFC travelled across the park to their original home stadium Anfield, to play Liverpool in a testimonial match for LFC goalkeeper Bruce Grobbelaar. An eventful 2-2 draw took place, with Stuart Barlow & Peter Beagrie scoring the Blues goals.
#124 Derry City 2-3 EFC - Jan 20, 1993. For the second year in a row, EFC headed to Northern Ireland to face Derry City in a midweek friendly. The Blues won 3-2, with goals from Gary Ablett, Alan Harper & youngster Chris Priest.
#125 St Paul’s 0-8 EFC - Mar 27, 1993. EFC took advantage of an international break to head to Jersey, Channel Islands, to play an exhibition match vs local side St Paul’s. EFC won 8-0 with 8 different scorers - Barlow, Beagrie, Cottee, Ebbrell, Harper, Preki, Rideout & Watson.
#126 Aston Villa 3-1 EFC - May 16, 1993. EFC headed to Mauritius for a post-season tournament to mark 25yrs of the Air Mauritius airline & took on Aston Villa. EFC had just finished 13th in the Prem whilst Villa had finished 2nd. Villa won 3-1 here, Hinchcliffe scoring EFCs goal.
#127 Mauritius XI 0-3 EFC - May 20, 1993. The final match of EFCs post-season tour of Mauritius saw them defeat a Mauritius XI 3-0. The EFC goalscorers were Peter Beardsley, Tony Cottee & Dave Watson. This was Beardsley’s final EFC goal, before his sale to Newcastle in July 1993.
#128 Grenchen 1-5 EFC - Jul 15, 1993. The first match of a new pre-season saw EFC head to Switzerland to face local side Grenchen. EFC won 5-1, with 2 goals from Tony Cottee, 2 goals from Preki, & 1 goal from triallist Jack de Gier. Despite his goal, Kendall did not sign de Gier.
#129 FC Basel 1-0 EFC -Jul 17, 1993. The 2nd match of EFCs pre-season tour of Switzerland saw EFC fall to a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Swiss side FC Basel. Dario Zuffi scored for Basel. His son Luca now plays for Basel, whilst other sons Sandro & Nico also became pro footballers.
#130 Neuchatal Xamax 1-2 EFC -Jul 18 1993. EFC bounced back from the previous days loss to FC Basel by defeating Swiss side Neuchatal Xamax 2-1 with goals from Mo Johnston & Stuart Barlow. This was Johnston’s final goal for EFC before his free transfer move to Hearts in Oct 1993.
#131 Stade Lausanne 2-7 EFC - Jul 21, 1993. EFCs good pre-season form continued with a 7-2 win over Swiss side Stade Lausanne. Goals came from Ablett, Barlow, Cottee, Hinchcliffe, Ward, & 2 from Preki. He would only score once more for the Blues before his departure in June 1994.
#132 Schalke 04 2-0 EFC - Jul 24, 1993. EFCs latest pre-season test saw them lose 0-2 against German side, Schalke 04. Andreas Muller & Michael Buskens scored for the Germans, with both going on to win the 1997 UEFA Cup with Schalke 04 & Buskens later managing the club twice.
#133 Hearts 0-2 EFC - Aug 2, 1993. The Blues headed to Edinburgh to face Hearts for the 3rd time in 6 years, this time to play in the testimonial match for Hearts veteran goalkeeper Henry Smith. EFC ran out 2-0 winners, with goals from Tony Cottee & Matt Jackson.
#134 Port Vale 1-1 EFC - Aug 6, 1993. In the Blues’ penultimate pre-season friendly, Howard Kendall took the team on their first trip to Vale Park for more than 10 years. The match saw them draw 1-1 with their hosts, the Valiants. Gary Ablett scored EFC’s only goal of the game.
#135 Tranmere Rovers 1-2 EFC - Aug 10, 1993. The Blues’ final pre-season match saw them take their annual trip to Prenton Park. EFC secured another victory, this time 2-1, with goals from Peter Beagrie & Tony Cottee.
#136 Bournemouth 0-2 EFC - Jul 18, 1994. The Mike Walker era had begun 6 months earlier & this was the first match of his one & only EFC pre-season. And what a pre-season it was... It started with a 2-0 win at Dean Court, with John Ebbrell & Dave Watson the Blues goalscorers.
#137 IFK Simrishamn 0-6 EFC - Jul 21, 1994. The first match of the first of 3 separate overseas pre-season tours saw the Blues go to Sweden & face local side IFK Simrishamn. EFC won 6-0, with goals from 6 separate scorers - Ablett, Cottee, Ebbrell, Hinchcliffe, Snodin & Stuart.
#138 BK Fram 0-3 EFC - Jul 22, 1994. The 2nd of EFCs 4 pre-season matches in Sweden saw them defeat local side BK Fram 3-0. Goals came from Paul Rideout, Stuart Barlow & Gary Rowett. Rowett would go on to manage 4 different Championship clubs including his current club, Millwall.
#139 IFK Hassleholm 2-1 EFC - Jul 24, 1994. EFC’s 3rd pre-season match in 4 days saw them lose 1-2 to local Swedish side, IFK Hassleholm. Paul Rideout scored the Blues’ only goal. And yes, this is the cover of the actual - 100% real - matchday programme for this friendly.
#140 Bjarreds IF 0-5 EFC -Jul 26, 1994. The final match of EFC’s tour of Sweden saw them bounce back with a 5-0 win over local side Bjarreds IF. The goals came from Tony Cottee, Graham Stuart and a hat trick from Brett Angell. These would prove to be Angell’s final goals for EFC.
#141 Blau-Weiss Papenburg 0-2 EFC- Aug 1 1994. After a 4 game tour of Sweden Mike Walker decided to follow this up with a 4 games-in-5 days Germany tour. No wonder EFC didnt win their 1st league game until Nov! EFC beat a German regional side 2-0 with goals from Cottee & Rideout.
#142 St Pauli 1-2 EFC- Aug 3, 1994. Next was German side St Pauli. EFC won 2-1 with goals from Barlow & Limpar. This was Anders Limpar’s 1st goal for EFC. Famously @Prenno bought Bratwursts for Big Nev & Hinchcliffe to eat pre-match. Nev quipped this was ‘the Dog & Duck on tour’.
#143 FC Cologne 2-0 EFC - Aug 5, 1994. The Blues’ 3rd game in 5 days saw them visit the Stadtlohn Stadium to face top flight Bundesliga side, FC Cologne. EFC fell to a 0-2 defeat, with both goals scored by Christian Heide.
#144 Vitesse Arnhem 2-2 EFC (EFC won 3-1 on pens) - Aug 6, 1994. EFC’s 4th game in 6 days(!) saw them face Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem at the Stadtlohn Stadium in Germany. EFC drew 2-2, with goals from full backs Matt Jackson & Andy Hinchcliffe, before winning 3-1 on pens. Details:
#145 Oldham Athletic 2-2 EFC - Aug 9, 1994. EFC headed to Boundary Park to face Joe Royle’s Oldham Athletic in a testimonial for Oldham legend Frankie Bunn. The Blues drew 2-2 with John Ebbrell & Gary Rowett on the scoresheet. Royle would become EFC manager just 3 months later.
#146 Torino 0-2 EFC - Aug 13, 1994. Possibly the most chaotic pre-season in EFC history ended in with EFC travelling to Italy to play two 45 min matches on the same afternoon vs Italian sides Torino & Lazio. It started well with a 2-0 win over Torino, goals from Rideout & Limpar.
#147 Lazio 4-0 EFC - Aug 13, 1994. In a fitting end to Mike Walker’s one & only shambolic EFC pre-season, after playing a 45 minute game vs Torino, EFCs players then had to wait 1 hour before they played Lazio in another 45 min game. EFC lost 0-4. 94 days later Walker was sacked.
#148 Drogheda United 1-2 EFC -Mar 25, 1995. Joe Royle was now EFC manager & had revitalised the club. EFC took advantage of the international break to play Drogheda in Ireland as part of Neville Southall’s testimonial year celebrations. EFC won 2-1, goals from Amokachi & Ebbrell.
#149 Tranmere Rovers 3-1 EFC - Jul 28, 1995. Fresh off winning the 1995 FA Cup, the Blues headed to Prenton Park for the first match of pre-season. A bumper crowd witnessed Rovers triumph 3-1, their first victory over EFC in 68 years. Duncan Ferguson scored the Blues only goal.
#150 EFC 2-2 Celtic - Aug 1, 1995. EFC welcomed Celtic to Goodison Park for Neville Southall’s testimonial match. A bumper crowd, boosted by a large away following, saw a 2-2 draw. Duncan Ferguson & Anders Limpar scored for EFC. Pre-match entertainment featured a celebs match.

#151 Oldham Athletic 2-1 EFC - Aug 5, 1995. Joe Royle took EFC back to the club he’d previously managed to provide the opposition in a testimonial match for Oldham’s Andy Barlow. Graeme Sharp, now Oldham player-boss, led them to a 2-1 win over EFC. Rideout scored EFCs only goal.
#152 EFC 2-0 PSV Eindhoven - Aug 8, 1995. A midweek pre-season evening friendly at Goodison as EFC prepared for the upcoming Charity Shield game at Wembley by playing Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven. EFC won 2-0, with goals from Paul Rideout & Tony Grant. @CarolynRideout @Rideout9

0-2 EFC -Nov 9 1995. Between 1995 & 1999 EFC had a sponsorship deal with Home Farm (Ireland) leading to them bearing Everton’s name & EFC having 1st pick of their best players (EFC signed Richard Dunne in 1996). Goals from Barlow & Rideout gave EFC the win.
#154 Mick McCarthys National League XI 0-1 EFC- May 10 1996. A post-season friendly for EFC saw them travel to Ireland for the testimonial of Irish legend Terry Eviston. EFC won 1-0, with a goal by Craig Short beating a Mick McCarthy-led opposition comprised of Irish Lge players.
#155 EFC 2-2 Borussia M’Gladbach (M’Gladbach won 3-2 on pens)- Jul 27, 1996. EFC, M’Gladbach, LFC & Porto took part in a 4 team tournament playing for the Sir John Moores Centenary Trophy. This match was played at Anfield. EFC drew 2-2 w/ goals from Dunc & Speed but lost on pens.
#156 EFC 0-0 Liverpool - Jul 28, 1996. Both teams had lost their semi final matches in the Sir John Moores Centenary Trophy tournament the previous day. This was a 3rd/4th play off match & after a drab 0-0 draw, both sides opted not to participate in a pen shoot out afterwards.
#157 Tranmere Rovers 1-2 EFC - Jul 31, 1996. EFC bounced back with a 2-1 win over Tranmere Rovers in their latest pre-season friendly at Prenton Park. The match doubled as the Liverpool Senior Cup Final, but EFC played a 1st team XI. EFCs goals came from Big Dunc & Kanchelskis.
#158 Aberdeen 1-3 EFC -Aug 3, 1996. EFC ventured to Scotland to face Aberdeen, providing the opposition in a testimonial match for Aberdeen legend Brian Grant. A bumper Pittodrie crowd saw EFC win 3-1 with goals from Kanchelskis, Watson & an own goal from Aberdeen’s Brian Irvine.
#159 Wrexham 3-4 EFC - Aug 6, 1996. EFC travelled to the Racecourse Ground in Wales for a cracker of a pre-season friendly. Wrexham were a League One team at this point & had finished 8th the previous season. The Blues won 4-3 with Andrei Kanchelskis scoring all 4 goals for EFC.
#160 Birmingham City 1-2 EFC - Aug 10, 1996. EFC’s final pre-season friendly of the summer saw them face Trevor Francis’ Birmingham. Former EFC players Barry Horne, Gary Ablett & Mike Newell were in Birmingham’s side. EFC won 2-1 with goals from Duncan Ferguson & Graham Stuart.
#161 Jersey FA Select XI 1-10 EFC - Feb 15, 1997. EFC faced a Jersey FA Select XI in a friendly to commemorate Springfield Stadium’s new stand in St Helier. EFC won 10-1, their biggest friendly win for 33yrs, with goals from Barmby (4), Ferguson (2), Speed (2), McCann & Thomsen.
#162 Derby County 4-1 EFC - May 14, 1997. Caretaker player-boss Dave Watson took EFC to Derby for a testimonial match for Derby’s Martin Taylor. This was the final ever senior team match held at the Baseball Ground, Derbys home for 102yrs. Derby won 4-1, Speed scoring EFCs goal.
#163 Everton 3-2 Glasgow Rangers -Jul 16, 1997. Howard Kendall had returned to EFC as manager for a third spell. His first match in charge was Dave Watson’s testimonial match where EFC faced Glasgow Rangers. EFC won 3-2 with goals from Nick Barmby, Michael Branch & Graham Stuart.
#164 Tranmere Rovers 3-0 EFC - Jul 20, 1997. An afternoon to forget for EFC. Goals from John Aldridge, future Wigan boss Paul Cook & an own goal from Gary Speed gave Tranmere a 3-0 win. EFC had Hungarian triallist goalkeeper Szabolcs SĂĄfĂĄr in goal. He never played for EFC again.
#165 Stoke City 0-2 EFC - Jul 22, 1997. The Blues took a trip to the Potteries to face Stoke City & provide the opposition in a testimonial match for Stoke City legend Ian Cranson. The Blues won 2-0 with goals from Nick Barmby & Graham Stuart.
#166 EFC 1-0 Ajax - Jul 26, 1997. The Blues took part in a 4 team, 2 day Umbro Cup tournament at Goodison Park, with the other participants being Ajax, Chelsea & Newcastle. EFC reached the Final by beating Ajax 1-0, with a goal from Gary Speed. Chelsea awaited EFC in the Final.
#167 EFC 1-3 Chelsea - Jul 27, 1997. Day 2 of the Umbro Cup tournament saw EFC face Chelsea in the final at Goodison. With the match live on Channel 5, Chelsea beat EFC 3-1, with 2 goals from Gianfranco Zola & 1 goal from Gianluca Vialli. Big Dunc scored the only goal for EFC.
#168 Guernsey XI 0-6 EFC - Jul 29, 1997. The Blues took a trip to the Channel Islands for a pre-season friendly against a Guernsey XI. EFC thrashed the Channel Islanders 6-0, with goals from Duncan Ferguson, Claus Thomsen, and 2 goals each from Gavin McCann & Graham Stuart.
#169 Bristol City 0-3 EFC - Aug 1, 1997. With the season’s start drawing ever closer, EFC travelled to Ashton Gate to face Bristol City in a pre-season friendly match to mark City’s 100th anniversary. The Blues won 3-0 with goals from Nick Barmby, Gareth Farrelly & Graham Stuart.
#170 Sheffield United 0-4 EFC - Aug 19, 1997. EFC made the trip to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United in a friendly match to mark the opening of United’s new John Street Stand. The Blues won 4-0 with 2 goals from Nick Barmby & 1 goal each from Michael Branch & Duncan Ferguson.
#171 Panathinaikos 4-1 EFC - Sep 7, 1997. EFC took advantage of the early season international break by making the trip to Greece to play Panathinaikos in a friendly match, a rematch of the 1971 European Cup Quarter Final between the 2 sides. EFC lost 1-4, Branch scoring for EFC.
#172 Chester City 1-1 EFC -Jul 25, 1998. This was Walter Smith’s 1st EFC game in charge vs a Kevin Ratcliffe-managed Chester City. The game nearly didn’t happen- Chester’s players called off a strike over unpaid wages at the last minute. John Spencer scored for EFC in a 1-1 draw.
#173 Port Vale 1-0 EFC -Jul 28, 1998. EFC travelled to Vale Park, falling to a 0-1 defeat. Alec Cleland was ‘sin-binned’ for 5 mins for a bad foul in the 1st half whilst the ref ordered Smith to sub EFC debutant Marco Materazzi after the Italian squared up to Vale’s Martin Foyle.
#174 AZ Alkmaar 3-1 EFC -Aug 1, 1998. EFC headed to Holland for a pre-season friendly match tour. First up was AZ Alkmaar. Both new EFC signings John Collins & Olivier Dacourt made their debuts for EFC. Disappointingly Alkmaar triumphed 3-1. Tony Grant scored EFCs only goal.
#175 Espanyol 0-2 EFC -Aug 2, 1998. EFC headed to Belgium to take part in a 3 team ‘Tournoi de Gala’ featuring Belgian hosts Standard Liege & Spanish side Espanyol. In an initial 45min match, EFC beat Espanyol 2-0, with goals from John Spencer & an own goal from Espanyol’s Nando.
#176 Standard Liege 0-0 EFC (Liege won 3-2 on pens) -Aug 2, 1998. The 2nd of EFCs 45 min-long matches of the day saw them draw 0-0 with Liege, then lose 2-3 to them on pens. However despite losing, EFC actually won the tournament on goal difference! (Stats courtesy of Toffeeweb).
#177 Sint Truidense 0-0 EFC - Aug 5, 1998. EFCs 3rd match on their pre-season tour of Belgium saw them draw 0-0 with Belgian side Sint Truidense. A very disappointing match saw EFC fail to score from open play once again, now having scored just 4 goals in 6 friendlies thus far.
#178 VV Una 1-6 EFC - Aug 6, 1998. EFC found their scoring boots with an emphatic 6-1 win over Dutch side VV Una. Mickaël Madar scored a hat-trick whilst also on the scoresheet were Michael Branch, John Spencer & triallist Yasser El-Hamrouni. Despite his goal, EFC didnt sign him.
#179 Fortuna Sittard 2-0 EFC - Aug 8, 1998. EFC’s poor pre-season continued with a 0-2 loss vs Dutch side Fortuna Sittard in a 1985 ECWC Quarter Final rematch. MickaĂ«l Madar was sent off for EFC. Goals came from Wilfred Bouma (who later played for Aston Villa) & Regillio Simons.
#180 Chester City 2-3 EFC -Jul 20, 1999. The start of another pre-season & it began with a win. EFC faced Div 4 Chester City owned by Terry Smith. Kevin Ratcliffe would resign as Chester boss a few wks after this. EFC won 3-2 with 2 goals from Nick Barmby & 1 from David Unsworth.
#181 Burnley 1-0 EFC - Jul 22, 1999. Turf Moor definitely wasn’t a ‘Happy Place, Happy Place’ for Walter Smith’s underperforming Everton side as the Blues lost 0-1 to third-tier Burnley in their 2nd pre-season friendly of the summer. Alan Lee scored the only goal for Burnley.
#182 Rotherham Utd 0-1 EFC - Jul 24, 1999. EFC won the One-2-One Charity Cup with a 1-0 win over Rotherham at Millmoor. The Yorkshire side shared the same shirt sponsor as EFC. Kevin Campbell scored EFCs only goal of the game. Triallist Ronnie Ekelund was a 2nd half sub for EFC.
#183 EFC 1-0 Man City -Jul 28, 1999. EFC faced Championship side Man City in a testimonial for ex-Blue John Ebbrell, who’d been forced to retire through injury aged 29. Managed by Joe Royle, City had just been promoted from League 1. EFC won 1-0 with a goal from Franny Jeffers.
#184 Tranmere Rovers 1-1 EFC -Jul 31, 1999. The Blues travelled to Prenton Park to face Tranmere in a testimonial for Johnny Morrissey. The match finished 1-1 with EFC triallist Ronnie Eklund scoring the Blues only goal. EFC opted not to sign the former Southampton player Eklund.
#185 EFC 4-3 PSV Eindhoven - Aug 3, 1999. The Blues final pre-season friendly of the summer saw them welcome Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven to Goodison. An eventful game saw EFC win 4-3, with 2 goals from Kevin Campbell & 1 goal a piece from Don Hutchinson & Francis Jeffers.
#186 Kilmarnock 1-1 EFC - Nov 11, 1999. EFCs final friendly match of the 1990s saw them travel to Scotland to face Kilmarnock in a testimonial match for Killies’ Ally Mitchell. EFC drew 1-1, with on-loan striker Tommy Johnson scoring for EFC. Johnson’s loan ended 2 weeks later.
#187 Dundee Utd 2-1 EFC -Jul 25, 2000. The first pre-season of the new millennium saw EFC head to Tannadice to face Dundee Utd in a testimonial for Maurice Malpas. Utd won 2-1, David Weir scoring for EFC. Paul Gascoigne & Thomas Gravesen made their EFCs debuts in a lively affair.
#188 Blackburn Rovers 2-1 EFC -Jul 29, 2000. EFC travelled to Ewood Park to face the Graeme Souness-managed Championship side Blackburn Rovers. EFC lost 1-2 with Danny Cadamarteri scoring EFCs only goal. New signing Tommy Gravesen, playing his 2nd ever game for EFC, was sent off.
#189 Preston North End 0-5 EFC - Jul 31, 2000. EFC ended their run of pre-season defeats with an emphatic 5-0 win away at David Moyes’ Championship side Preston North End. Both Niclas Alexandersson & Francis Jeffers scored twice whilst Thomas Gravesen scored his 1st goal for EFC.
#190 Tranmere Rovers 2-0 EFC - Aug 2, 2000. EFC suffered a disappointing 0-2 loss away at Tranmere. Smith played a largely second string side featuring the likes of Peter Degn, Jamie Milligan & Phil Jevons, but the hosts were victorious via goals from Wayne Gill & Wayne Allison.
#191 Exeter City 1-4 EFC - Aug 5, 2000. The Blues unpredictable pre-season form continued. They ventured to the South West to face Exeter City in a testimonial for the Grecians’ Chris Curran. EFC won 4-1, with 2 goals from Alex Nyarko & 1 goal each from Alexandersson & Jeffers.
#192 Plymouth Argyle 0-5 EFC -Aug 7, 2000. EFC beat Plymouth 5-0 with the most Walter Smith-era list of goalscorers imaginable: 2 goals from Joe-Max Moore & 1 goal each from Paul Gascoigne, Mark Hughes & Alex Nyarko. This was Gazza’s 1st EFC goal, 1 of only 2 goals for the club.
#193 Yeovil Town 0-1 EFC -Aug 9, 2000. EFC concluded their South West tour with a 1-0 win v Yeovil. EFCs only goal was scored by triallist Samuel Ipoua. Despite this EFC chose not to sign the nomadic Cameroon striker who played in the 1998 World Cup & for Nice, Toulouse & others.
#194 EFC 3-1 Man City - Aug 12, 2000. EFCs final pre-season match saw them face newly-promoted Man City at Goodison in a testimonial for EFC player Joe Parkinson, who had been forced to retire through injury at age 28. EFC won 3-1, with 2 goals from Alexandersson & 1 from Nyarko.
#195 Preston North End 1-3 EFC- Jul 28, 2001. Walter Smith began his final pre-season as EFC boss with a match v David Moyes’ Preston @ Deepdale. EFC won 3-1 with goals from Kevin Campbell, Joe-Max Moore & David Unsworth. Less than 8 months later Moyes replaced Smith as EFC boss.
#196 Burnley 0-1 EFC - Jul 31, 2001. EFC’s latest friendly was a trip to Turf Moor to face Championship side Burnley. EFC won 1-0 with Niclas Alexandersson on the scoresheet. New EFC signing Tomasz Radzinski made his EFC debut as a substitute & enjoyed an impressive 30 min cameo.
#197 Tranmere Rovers 1-0 EFC - Aug 4, 2001. EFC took a Ferry Across The Mersey to face Dave Watson’s Tranmere Rovers side, in the annual friendly at Prenton Park. Tranmere were victorious 1-0, with a goal through Nick Henry. 18 year old Nick Chadwick made his EFC 1st team debut.
#198 Wigan Athletic 1-6 EFC - Aug 7, 2001. EFCs first trip to the JJB Stadium saw them batter Paul Jewell’s Wigan side 6-1. Kevin Campbell scored a hat trick, whilst Duncan Ferguson, Niclas Alexandersson & Alan Stubbs were also on the scoresheet for EFC.
#199 EFC 1-0 Espanyol - Aug 13, 2001. EFCs final pre-season friendly saw them welcome La Liga side Espanyol to Goodison for the testimonial of EFC legend Alex Young. EFC won 1-0, with Joe-Max Moore scoring the only goal. Youngster Tony Hibbert came on as sub for the last 20 mins.
#200 Falkirk 0-3 EFC - Apr 30, 2002. New EFC boss David Moyes’ first friendly in charge saw him take EFC to Falkirk to play for the Alex Scott Memorial Trophy (Scott played for both EFC & Falkirk in the 1960s & 1970s). EFC won 3-0, with goals from Campbell, Blomqvist & Pembridge.
An additional note is that triallist Russell Howarth played in goal for EFC in this game but Moyes opted not to sign him. Howarth went on to sign for Tranmere & later Bradford, but retired from football aged 25, trained to be a paramedic & now works for a charity in Afghanistan.
#201 SC Bruck 1-3 EFC - Jul 15, 2002. The first pre-season of the David Moyes era began as EFC headed to Austria to play some local teams. An EFC XI featuring many youngsters beat SC Bruck 3-1. On the scoresheet were Tomasz Radzinski, Sean O’Hanlon & 16 year old Wayne Rooney.

#202 SC Weiz SC 2-10 EFC -Jul 16, 2002. EFC concluded their tour with their biggest friendly win for 5yrs, a 10-2 thrashing of local side SC Weiz. Both Wayne Rooney & Kevin McLeod scored hat tricks, whilst Tomasz Radzinski scored 2 & Leon Osman & triallist Omar Daley also scored.

#203 Shrewsbury Town 0-3 EFC -Jul 20, 2002. Moyes 1st EFC pre-season friendly on domestic soil saw them travel to Gay Meadow. An experimental EFC team won 3-0. Kevin Campbell scored 2 whilst Tomasz Radzinski scored one. The Shrews would knock EFC out of the FA Cup 6 months later.
This game was notable for Moyes giving chances to Brazilian triallist Juliano Rodrigo & Greek triallist Konstantinos Loumboutis. Rodrigo was signed on a 1yr loan but ruptured knee ligaments in Sep 2002 & was released in May 2003. Loumboutis wasnt signed & later played in Holland.
#204 Queen’s Park 0-6 EFC - Jul 23, 2002. EFC travelled to Glasgow to face Scottish Div 3 side Queen’s Park at Hampden Park stadium. EFC won 6-0 & Rooney-mania was starting to get media attention, as the 16yr old scored a hat trick here. Big Dunc, McLeod & Idan Tal also scored.
#205 Dunfermline Athletic 0-3 EFC - Jul 27, 2002. EFCs mini pre-season tour of Scotland continued with a trip to East End Park. The Blues beat Dunfermline 3-0, with goals from Kevin Campbell, Thomas Gravesen & Gary Naysmith. Triallist Ibrahim Said came on for the last 20 mins.
Egyptian centre half Ibrahim Said later signed for EFC on a 6 month loan deal in January 2003 but didn’t play a single match for EFC. He was infamously dropped from a Merseyside derby match squad for dying his hair red & he later fell out with Moyes, labelling him a ‘dictator’.
#206 Hibernian 2-2 EFC - Jul 29, 2002. The final match of EFCs Scottish tour saw them travel to Easter Road, for a 2-2 draw with Hibernian. Wayne Rooney (still aged 16) scored his 8th goal of pre-season whilst David Unsworth scored too. Richard Wright made his EFC debut in goal.
#207 Wrexham 0-2 EFC - Aug 3, 2002. EFC, back from Scotland, ventured to Wales to face Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground. EFC won 2-0 with goals from Tomasz Radzinski & newly-signed-on-loan Juliano Rodrigo. Chinese signings Li Tie & Li Wei Feng made their EFC debuts in this match.
#208 Anderlecht 2-0 EFC - Aug 6, 2002. The Blues’ biggest test of pre-season so far saw them travel to Belgium & lose 0-2 to Belgian giants, Anderlecht. Gilles de Bilde, formerly of Aston Villa & Sheff Wed, scored for Anderlecht, as did the Australian international Clayton Zane.
#209 EFC 0-1 Atletico Bilbao -Aug 10, 2002. The Blues finished their 1st pre-season under David Moyes by hosting La Liga side Atletico Bilbao at Goodison, in a testimonial for EFC legend David Unsworth. A disappointing match saw Bilbao win 1-0, with a goal through Ismael Urzaizp.
#210 Bad Goisern 0-7 EFC -Jul 18, 2003. EFC began 03/04 pre-season with an Austrian tour. First up were the aptly named Bad Goisern whom EFC thrashed 7-0. Youngster Nick Chadwick scored a hat trick, whilst Italian triallist Patrizio Pascucci scored 2. Campbell & Weir also scored.

#211 SC Schwan 1-4 EFC -Jul 19, 2003. EFCs Austrian tour concluded with a 2nd game in 2 days. SC Schwan were the recipients of a 4-1 beating by the mighty Blues, with goals coming from Italian triallist Patrizio Pascucci, Tomasz Radzinski, Steve Watson & an own goal by the hosts.

#212 Rochdale 0-1 EFC -Jul 22, 2003. In a rarity, Moyes split the 1st team squad in two & played 2 friendlies at the same time. Moyes managed an EFC side at Crewe, whilst his asst Alan Irvine took charge of a Blues side who defeated Rochdale 1-0, Radzinski scoring the only goal.
#213 Crewe Alexandra 2-0 EFC -Jul 22, 2003. On the same night as the win v Rochdale, Moyes managed the other half of the EFC 1st team squad in a match vs Crewe Alexandra in a testimonial for Crewe’s Shaun Smith & Steve McAuley. Crewe won 2-0 with goals from Dean Ashton & Ben Rix.
#214 Glasgow Rangers 2-3 EFC -Jul 26, 2003. David Moyes took the Blues to Ibrox to face Alex McLeish’s Glasgow Rangers side & triumphed 3-2 in an excellent friendly match win. Goals for EFC came from Li Tie, David Unsworth & Alan Stubbs - with Stubbs scoring a last minute winner.
I went to this match! Went up early on the train to Glasgow for my 1st ever visit to Ibrox. Gr8 big stadium, reminded me of Goodison. Loads of EFC fans at this game. I remember celebrating Stubbs winner then a few disgruntled Rangers fans chased us back to the station afterwards!
