This is a good thread BUT we might not see such chaos — it’s not clear that anyone actually purported to fire Berman last night.

Perhaps Barr asked him to resign, he refused, then Barr put out that release stating that Berman was “stepping down,” trying to force his hand. 1/ https://twitter.com/harrylitman/status/1274341983801106437
Obviously that failed spectacularly, but it might mean that there’s no who-is-the-US Attorney crisis. Just a (deliberately) incorrect statement about whether Berman had resigned.

So unless Trump/Barr up the ante and really try to fire him, this *might* subside. 2/
Barr might now reason — and more importantly, be able to convince Trump — that it would be stupid to force this.

That’s not necessarily a happy ending, however. 3/
It doesn’t ensure that Berman can still do whatever it was that caused this in the first place — I assume one or more specific investigations that involved Trump or his business or family.

Barr remains Berman’s boss, and can order him not to do stuff. 4/
Sure, it might leak, but the impact of a leak is a lot less than the impact of an indictment.

As ever, if we want return DOJ to normal, we’ll need to vote these guys out in November. 5/end
P.S. Report supporting my no-firing theory. https://twitter.com/karascannell/status/1274384500152250369
P.P.S. Now Barr says Trump just fired Berman. (I was right that they didn’t do it last night; wrong that they wouldn’t do it.)
