Martyrs day |June 20, 2020: a thread
First things first: Eternal glory to our martyrs without whose tremendous sacrifice we would not have a country to call our own. 🇪🇷
Now to get into the thread: Sometimes I think we romanticize the struggle bc we came out victorious against all odds. We love to hear and tell stories about unity and fraternity and how our fathers/mothers dropped everything in order to bring about a liberated Eritrea...
But war is not pretty, def not easy, and it asks a lot from a people. And our people suffered, A LOT. Not only at the hands of our enemies.. but also by the hands/powers that were fighting to bring them freedom... as much as we don’t like to hear it.
This martyrs day let’s say an extra prayer for the child martyrs. Those who did not voluntarily join the struggle, but were forced out of their villages and the warm arms of their mothers into gedli
Some just because there was a need, others as punishment for families whose sons decided to leave the struggle. This a truth and there is a trauma that continues to exist.
And we are going to have to tell these stories (all the good, the bad, the ugly) if there’s going to be even a remote chance of reconciliation in Eritrea.
Although it is a family history long before me, thinking about the tears my grandmother cried for her baby girl is difficult. That kind of pain is unimaginable to me.
I wonder.. did he think about the pain of my grandmother, and others like her, when he stood up and said “aykesernan” without a flinch?
So you can understand the anger and betrayal my family and families that suffered loss (esp) of this kind must feel when we see the state of Eritrea today. We didn’t send her. She didn’t go herself. They TOOK her for the cause of a free and independent Eritrea.
It’s now 2020. FOUR decades after our loss. And we still question the reason behind that loss. We are still not at peace.
They talk about the support they give families of martyrs. The billions of nakfa spent on them over the years.. keep your coins! Give us the Eritrea we deserve!!!
The conditions hgdef have created in the country have pushed us all out anyway... SO the only support we need is to see the ideals and visions of the struggle come to fruition.
