When your ambition is to obtain more power, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself you can do so w/o moral compromise, you can’t. If obtaining power is your ambition, you will make whatever compromise necessary in order to get it. The siren call of power is that strong.
Tolkien does such an excellent job portraying this reality in Lord of The Rings. Sméagol was once a normal looking creature, something like a hobbit, but once he encountered the ring of power, he not only killed his friend for it but slowly over time he mutated into Gollum.
3. Have y’all ever thought about Tolkien’s portrayal of Gollum & what he was communicating about power?
There were only 3 people in his story that were able to resist the siren call of power, they were those who were those who were fully committed to the work of service.

4.
Aragorn - Humble King
Samwise- Frodo’s friend committed to serving him.
Frodo-A hobbit of fueled by love, he was ultimately overcome.
Everyone else failed to resist the siren call of the Ring of Power. Even normally Honorable men like Boromir failed tho redeemed himself.

5. Even powerful elves who for centuries were people of piece feared touching the Ring of Power b/c in their ancient wisdom they feared what such raw power could do them. Galadriel reflected on what It would do to her & in a moment she lost it, just be thinking about it.
6. LOTR is a more elaborate Christian Allegory than his friend Lewis’ & Narnia, Tolkien was trying to inform thru story the danger of pursuing power like world; for self-exaltation vs power as a tool of service only carried well by the humble who seek interest of others.
7. Yes, I’m sure some LOTR enthusiasts will hit my mentions w/ elven speak & “well actually”, but point & principle I’m seeking to get across is clear. Those who were most able to resist were those who were humble & Gollum was the conclusion of one given fully over to power.
