1. Sequence of events in relation to Galwan:

PLA intrudes into unclarified areas of the LAC where - by agreement - neither India or China build on, and set up camp.

We reportedly get information and sit on it, a huge intelligence failure.
2. When the scale of the PLA deployment becomes clear, the government scrambles troops from Ladakh, reportedly on 6 hours notice.

Set of talks open, but there is complete opacity on the discussions, so the Indian public doesn't know what the issue is about.
3. Through the various rounds of meetings, it seems the Indian side misunderstood how invested the Chinese were in what they were doing.

The disengagement might have been officially agreed upon, but it does not seem to have been accepted on the ground.
4. The full details of the violence will com out in time, including any casualties on the Chinese side, but we do know that 20 Indian soldiers died and dozens were captured, being returned only after serious negotiations.

This finally led to pressure for the government to speak.
5. Playing it for the domestic audience, and trying to burnish his strongman image, Modi decided to stress on the lack of clarity of the border by suggesting that it was Indian soldiers that went to teach "people who cannot be named" a lesson on land that was not Indian.
6. In effect the Indian PM stated that the Indian Army was the aggressor in Chinese land, giving a propaganda coup to the Chinese, who have now claimed that - based on Modi's statement - the area is theirs, and India is the aggressor, and China, the victim!

(This is insane.)
The government can issue as many clarifications as it wants, and everyone may know the truth, but for our diplomats the position is untenable.

How do you argue that your PM is so invested in his image that he makes your own country the villain, when it was in the right?
