I’ve held my tongue for far too long.

As a 22 year old, fifth year senior in college, I really do just want to graduate and live my life.

Put all of these organizations aside, social issues aside and just chill sometimes. Enjoy my youth.
Not saying I can’t do that, but every morning I wake up I realize this is my passion. Where I belong. What I like I to do.

No matter what leadership capacity I’m in, where I’m at in life, or what’s going on.

I say all of that to say this:

We can’t let this moment pass.
To my Black student leaders on campus, we have to unify. Now.

I beg y’all, please.

Beyond a BSU Executive Council. Beyond just protests. Beyond just as students.

All of this doesn’t just fall on UL NAACP and BSU to figure out.
We have a Black woman as SGA President. I repeat, a BLACK WOMAN. At a PWI.

Say what you want about Hailey, but we must utilize her.

Just because you’re not involved in predominantly Black orgs doesn’t mean you can’t have a seat at the table.
It took me a while to realize that, but hey we all need to work together.

Just because some students don’t join NAACP, BSU, BMLA, or BWLA as “Black” orgs doesn’t mean they’re not still a Black student who faces adversities at this university.
We need our Black student leaders in UPC, SGA senators, RHA, SOS, Soul Camp, etc. also just as concerned and in this fight for change with us.

All hands on deck.

There are other professors and other faculty and staff outside of Mr. Matt, Reuben, and Ms. Tonya who are...
here to help us. We need them as well.

I’m not here for the awards, recognition, or accolades.

I just want change on this campus. Not bullshit photo ops when the work hasn’t even began. Not performative measures from the university until the news cycle changes.
Not unity videos.

This isn’t the time for constitutions, bylaws, amendments, or any other technicalities.

All rules go out the window in the battle for social justice and actual change.

I don’t think it would be right for me, as former NAACP President, to stay silent.
So to get to my point, I’ll say this in parting.

Here’s some of the things (from what I’ve saw us as students complain about) that we need to work on.

1. Reforming UL Parking & Transit. Insuring there is a plan in place to have more parking for future students...
1a. Reducing citation prices/and making appealing citations from UL Parking and Transit more accessible.

2. Hiring more Black faculty and staff AND ensuring they can receive tenure/other benefits so we as a university can retain Black faculty and staff. (e.g. Dr. Haywood)
3. Hiring more Black therapists, psychologists, and making support groups for marginalized groups on campus more visible (e.g. transgender students, foreign students, transfer students)

4. Working in conjunction with ULPD to build a safer campus for our women...
4a. having more self-defense classes, possible gun safety trainings, and ensuring sexual assault, predators, etc. is taken with full seriousness from administration on down.
4b/5. FIGHTING LIKE HELL to ensure these Title IX rollbacks are not accepted by our universities statewide. I could honestly go on and on about this one.

6. Ensuring students’ complaints about certain professors in different departments are actually heard and taken seriously.
6a. Again, this means for all of you (especially my nursing majors and bio majors) who have voiced about professors belittling, making racial mocroagressions, or anything of that nature—making sure these professors are disciplined swiftly and thoroughly.
7. Lastly, creating a department for African-American studies (both major and minor) for students that attend UL.

I would also love to see a mandatory BLM UNIV course that every student must pass in order to graduate, but hey that’s just me.
I may have forgot some demands and organizations (SAW and FCS), but again I want all of our voices to be heard.

I promise y’all I see what y’all be talking about that’s wrong on this campus. I’m not just a leader who wants glorification.

We need change and actual unity now.
With that being said, as usual, if you are a Black student who attends UL Lafayette join me and so many others in this fight for change.

A GroupMe will be created with professors and faculty and staff as well as Black students to all come together and voice our concerns.
