Back to Caribbean beauty competitions in the postwar UK. This is Claudia Jones, founder of what went on to become Notting Hill Carnival, but began life as a Caribbean Carnival in St Pancras Town Hall in London in 1959
Claudia also founded the West Indian Gazette, a Caribbean newspaper in London with an inclusive multiethnic vision of Caribbeanness. (Not in a 'Ten-Types' way, mind you!)
Claudia was a Trinidadian-born, Harlem-raised marxist, who had been a political prisoner during the McCarthyist witchhunts in the US and deported to Britain in the '50s where she settled in London and began organising amongst Caribbean people living in London.
