In honor of #WVDay ,here’s a thread of some WV history & facts:
The 1st Wheeling Convention(1861) was the the first action for WV to becoming a state after delegates from Western VA voted no to leaving the Union.WV would become a state on June 20th,1863

Harpers Ferry-
In 1859, John Brown and his small group of abolitionist, raided a federal armory in attempt to create an armed slave revolt and to make a political statement on slavery.
Brown was publicly hung for his actions
Battle of Point Pleasant-
I’m 1774, Lord Dunmore’s army at the hands of General Lewis fought the Shawnee and other Local Native Tribes. This battle was over territory and won by the settlers. This battle took place at Tu-Endi-Wei and is now the smallest state park in WV
Helvetia, WV
Located in Randolph County, this isolated Swiss town was established in 1869. Currently, this town still maintains their Swiss food, culture, and folkways.
I’ve visited and ate at the Hütte before and it’s very interesting little town.
Monongahela National Forest -
Established in 1920 (100 years) and is home to one of the most ecological diverse areas in the US. Spruce Knob is located here and is the highest point in WV. Hiking, camping, and more outdoor activities can be found in the Forest
TNT Area-
During WWII, Mason County was home to a TNT factory that produce explosives for the war. Concrete igloos were built to house the TNT and hidden in the woods so planes could not spot them. Now the McClintic Wildlife Management Area. Mothman is believed to live here.
New River Gorge and bridge -
Completed on 1977 and is the longest steel span in the western hemisphere and the third highest in the United States. Bridge Day is held here where BASE jumpers leap 876ft off the bridge. The New River is one of the oldest rivers on the continent.
Lost World Caverns-
Discovered in 1942 in Lewisburg, and is about 120 ft below the Earth, these caverns house amazing rock formations. This is a self guided tour where you can see stalagmites up to 80 ft tall.

Battle of Blair Mountain (1921)
Coal miners in Southern counties wanted to Unionize. The cooperations they worked for refused to let them. This lead to protest, riots, shoot outs and eventually lead to tear gas and pipe bombs being dropped on miners and their allies
The Greenbrier-
This has been a popular area for the healing springs since 1778. This luxury resort has been visited by 27/45 Presidents. In 1958, a bunker was built underground for Major US Political officials in case of a nuclear war. Located in White Sulphur Springs, WV.
My personal favorite state fact is that WV’s state fossil is the Megalonyx jeffersonii. This was a giant ground sloth that would roam the forest floors. These sloths inspired the mega sloths in “Fall Out 76”

And while this history is cool, we must acknowledge some of the less wonderful things in this state to better it.
WV is home to a 17.9% poverty rate, heart disease and cancer are the top two leading cause of death in WV, a major opium crisis, and 5.5% of adults have a serious mental illness.
