Looks more like an attempt to cleanse society of a source of ritual pollution, dressed up in modern, left-wing language.

Ideas of ritual pollution and expiation are the most ancient conceptions that pre-date what we now think of as morality and spirituality.
When you also note all the language that sounds remarkably like sympathetic magic - that we can harm the slavers by destroying their statues - then it really does seem that the most ancient ideas never go away.
