How a pandemic has revealed the ugly side of Pvt Hospitals & Insurance.
The treatment bills are shockingly sky-high.
The mishaps of health & insurance sector-

Even after going for a Cashless treatment, Apex Hospital, Borivali took ₹1 lac cash from us on grounds of consumables which is for ppe kits which are not covered under the Insurance. They assured us not to worry, it’ll be bare minimum.
We tried fetching bills & blood reports during the treatment but the hospital’s mismanagement was such that they sited the reason of low staff the cause for the delay, whereupon the intention was never to share the bills early on so that we wouldn’t know what was coming to us.
Final discharge was to happen on 11th as the reports of the COVID-19 test conducted on 8th came negative, the Insurance company raised queries on the hospital and sought clarification, but admin ppl were least bothered to reply the same day.
Since we weren’t at fault the hospital didn’t charge us for 12th but the discharge to happen only once the accounts were settled by all parties, leaving a negative patient in a positive facility.
Final bills came to us revealing the ultimate face of the entire Health sector.
The Insurance covered ₹1.37 lacs out of the ₹2.59 lacs and got us a discount of ₹9k so our payable (consumables) ₹1.13lacs (out of which ₹1 lac is with the hospital)
The final bill shows RMO charges per day whereas there was not a single nurse also for night duty to take care of the patient, the patient tried shouting out for assist on 2 different nights due to dry coughing but no one was there & they’ve charged ₹1,800 per day for the same.
The diet charges for a standard meal for everyone ? My only guess towards this charge is simply copying what the bigger Pvt Hopsitals are charging ₹700
Like who gives them the authority to charge any random charges to a patient who already is having a hard time.
This is where we finally questioned on the consumables which they were still not ready to share. They simply asked us to pay ₹13k and go.
The patient kept insisting on the breakup and we finally saw the largest chunk was the PER DAY cost of ₹10,370 here’s the breakdown of it
While everything unfair seemed somewhat possible to digest but this was beyond belief... What is actually going on, on the ground level of the treatment.
We asked them every possible reason for such a charge, the quantities of the kits, the prices, the replies were -
“Hume staff ko double salary deni hai to kahin se toh adjust hoga na Sir”
“RMO charges sabko apply kiya hai” When cross questioned that no one was present the reply was - “wo standard charge hai”
Consumables 5 units per day - “Wo cost to saare Hospitals laga rahe hain”
The cost of a single PPE kit here is ₹1,600 which is way beyond the market price. Hospitals order in bulk, this much even a normal citizen knows.
And this kit doesn’t come with a face shield, or a mask or any goggles. So all three charged separately to make it ₹10,370 per day.
There used to be 2 doctors who visited everyday and a single nurse sitting at the coridor.
Even if a normal person do the math the Doc won’t change the suit for every patient in the floor full of positive patients then why charge 5 kits from every patient everyday?
This is the most heart wrenching thing Infact even greater than the COVID-19 itself.
How is a common man who doesn’t have a voice supposed to stand up to such a scheme of looting the already vulnerable person who has been infected and is suffering.
I’m not even questioning the mismanagement, poor hygiene and lack of care to the patients, the patient had to remind multiple times on anything to the nurse or go down to the reception because the staff would simply go somewhere no one could find.
We understand during a time like this, it’s very insensitive to ask them to be more attentive - like they’re risking their lives to serve us, but when you see these bills, the question is on the entire ethics of this sector.
The reason this is shared is to bring to the light - the ultimate ground reality co existing between us, where nothing is being done to change this, Covid is indeed actually exposing the truth of how Health sector functions. Plus an insurance which doesn’t cover half the costs.
