The team has been working hard to get fit and prepare for the #MLSisBack tournament in Orlando. Time to peel back the curtain a little bit on our process and the reasoning behind the @ColumbusCrewSC training methodology.
5v3 positional rondo is a core exercise that Caleb has been using and refining for many years. It's functional in how we create numerical superiority to build out from the back. This scenario comes up all the time in games, which you'll see next.
This is from our most recent match, playing out on a goal kick. Notice the 5v3 and field position compared to the training scenario. This build-up creates multiple options, in this case attracting defenders to one side to switch and break lines into the attacking half.
Why build up this way? It allows us to get into the front half in fewer passes, where we can triangulate, create passing lanes, break lines to goal, and finish our chances. If we don't finish, it sets up the counterpress. But it's always better to score the first time if you can.
