Another map. This one is from 1832 and you can see that it is almost as good as a modern day one - a tribute to the map making abilities of the British surveyors. Let us see some interesting elements in this (1/n)
Note the thin black line running along the coast from Chilika to Puri. This was the original highway. The mouth of Chilika was almost closed & was crossed on foot through marshy land near Malud in Puri. The Zamindar of Malud got his title for helping the British cross it in 1803
There is no mention of Puri. Infact till 1850, the city was known as Sri Jagannath Puri or Jagannath for short. The district that was formed in 1828 was known as Southern Division of Cuttack at Pooree. This was later shortened to the present name.
The courses of the Daya and Bhargavi rivers appear to have changed. The old road from Puri to Cuttack crossed the unified Kuakhai river near Balakati where the Daya river separates today. Back then the split happened further downstream.
There is no mention of Bhubaneswar - even though it was a famous Saivite centre. Maybe its resident population was too small. Even places like Balianta and Andharua in modern Bhubaneswar are mentioned. Also note Hariharpur - the modern Jagatsinghpur town - an old textile centre
Tassiparra opposite Cuttack seems to be a misprint for modern Chasapada. Located right opposite the Barabati Fort on the other bank of the Mahanadi, this is where the highway from Cuttack to Calcutta crossed the river by boat. You can see a thin black line leading from it.
