Before I explain why he is totally wrong, it is very clear that his *actual* problem with the church is not its supposed inactivity but the fact that the CoE's leadership has come down strongly on the side of BLM.

He also likens himself to a Nazi which is absolutely stunning. https://twitter.com/spectator/status/1273925924258545665
The idea that the church leaders are sitting at home doing nothing is so wrong it stinks of someone wanting to write a column but doing no real research into it. His grasp of what preaching the gospel means is incredibly weak. Also he use of church and CoE interchangeably.
The church in Britain is responding to the crisis by feeding the hungry who are failed by the safety net, offering socially distanced bereavement support and emotional care, and providing spiritual support through endless Zoom calls.
And, churches closed their buildings because they are huge vectors of infection. Instead, churches have been doing *so* much online and by phone. Even my 95 yo grandmother who refuses to use an electric scale watched a sermon online, and is dialling a number to listen to hymns.
Any church leader will tell you they've been working as hard if not harder these last few months compared to normal as they try and adapt their normal practice while still providing the right level of care to their communities.
