Genuinely couldn't be less concerned about possible revolutionary overreach w/r/t statue toppling.
I agree that it's pretty dumb to topple a statue of US Grant in the name of anti-racism, but it's also a fucking piece of metal, if a dozen random shitheads knock it down, it's not like we can't put one back up later when cooler heads prevail.
By contrast, fairly confident that those Confederate Statues, once downed, are never coming back up.
meh who cares. if fox news wants to do a news cycle about what a swell guy Ulysses S. Grant was, that's rad https://twitter.com/ebarcuzzi/status/1274210430882246657
Ya it's more of a "haha oops" than a "how dare they!" it's not like we're burning the Library of Alexandria here https://twitter.com/JakeAnbinder/status/1274210875793125378
Also heads up to the guys with William Tecumseh Sherman avatars https://twitter.com/uhshanti/status/1274210634075439104
Similarly to George Washington, I think its perfectly possible to honor the rad stuff these guys did like smashing the traitors of the Confederacy while also acknowledging the extremely bad stuff they did, but let's not pretend these are unimpeachable good guys
Sherman is a great example of whats so uncomfortable about this: he's someone whose most notable accomplishment was very good, and was indisputably a military genius, but also was a giant, racist piece of shit basically his entire life.
But of course the thing that Sherman is widely hated for in parts of the USA - burning Atlanta and the scorched earth March to the Sea - was actually the best thing he ever did! Complicated!
Anyway everyone should be encouraged that we're having real discussions about this stuff after a lifetime of taking for granted which sorts of people deserve to be honored in the public square, with mostly dire results.
Wait scratch all that, I found the statue where I'll be furious if they tear it down: https://twitter.com/marxandlennon/status/1274072722247647246
