Berman's resignation wasn't expected and word of the move caught officials in his office off guard. His office prosecuted Michael Cohen—though he was recused from involvement in the case. And he was overseeing the investigation of Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani's business activities.
Attorney General Barr says the president will nominate Jay Clayton, the current chairman of the SEC, to succeed Berman.
Berman: "I learned in a press release from the Attorney General tonight that I was 'stepping down' ... I have not resigned, and have no intention of resigning ... our investigations will move forward without delay or interruption."
