I will bring this up and boost it as often as possible because I love Oregon and to really love something you have to be honest about it. We'll never fulfill our promise as a state if we don't confront this shit and work to fix it. https://twitter.com/Travonne/status/1274164040445554688
This is a mitzvah to have @Travonne catalogue this stuff here, and it's only the tip of the iceberg.

Vanport. Inner NE Portland. So many other examples. Portland is built on many things, but one of them is the theft of black wealth, property and life.
We can't coast on our reputation as a liberal mecca, just because we were okay with gay marriage and marijuana fairly early in the game. Gotta face facts. I didn't learn any of this until college, by the way, and I think that's true for most Oregonians.
In the 50s and 60s, Lower Albina was Portland's biggest black neighborhood. 3,000 people lived there. About 2/3 of them were black.

When they built I-5 through Portland, guess where they put it? Right through Lower Albina. 300 homes destroyed and never replaced.
The neighborhood collapsed because... well because you can't have a freeway in the middle of your neighborhood. Do you know how much that land would be worth right now? I believe the exact amount is "a fucking bunch."
If you're white and your grandparents bought a house in Laurelhurst in the 50s, that place might be worth $600,000 right now.

If you're black and your grandparents bought a house in Lower Albina in the 50s, they either sold it to the government or it was under a freeway.
