A lot of people consider Ungalo to be the worst of Dio's children but I personally find him to be the most interesting of the 3 in subtext, especially when analyzing his stands name "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the lyrics behind them
of course the lines"Is this the real life? / Is this just fantasy? / Caught in a landslide, / No escape from reality" match the stands ability to bring fictional characters to real life but the songs lyrics go even deeper than that
Each of Dio's kids shares a facet of Dio's worst personality traits. This was done in a way to show Pucci the worst parts of the man he idolized in order to better understand him. In Ungalo's case, he symbolizes Dio's addiction issues as well as Dio's resentment towards the world
Ungalo is a heavy drug addict. This fact alone relates to the Brando families history of substance abuse (Dio and his father Dario). Not much is revealed about his past but I personally have some headcanons that relate to the lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody
One of my headcanons is giving Ungalo another parallel to Dio in the form of his relation to his mother.Bohemian Rhapsodys lyrics often allude to the singers relationship with their mother, feeling regret or sadness towards how their current state of life is making their mom feel
It is canon is the manga that one of the few people Dio ever cared about is his Mother. Suggesting that the two had a close and loving relationship before her passing. Paired with the lyrics of Bohemian Rhapsody I believe Ungalo and his mother had a similar closeness.
A persons stand also always alludes to a certain aspect of a persons mental state and I've always wondered why Bohemian Rhapsody's ability was to bring fictional characters to real life. Especially in the way that it does, making them look so grotesque and monstrous
I personally believe its because Ungalo has a specific attachment/connection to fictional characters, maybe because his mother would often read him fairy tales to soothe him due to their hard homelife? As reflected in the songs mentioning of the singer being from a "poor family"
For Ungalo to still hold such a fondness for fiction and children's characters to me means that he face a lot of traumatic experiences in his childhood to still hold onto fiction so much that the concept of fiction becoming real manifests itself as part of his stand
I personally believe Ungalo's mother has passed away just like Dio, either due to similar circumstances or the due to the same problems Ungalo finds himself in now. Which is why he would feel so much resentment towards the world for dealing him such a shit hand in life
This is where the true tragedy of Ungalo's character derives from, having a life filled with nothing but tragedy, heartbreak, and addiction. Its no wonder he's the neurotic violent man he is now. He hates the world for treating him the way it has but does nothing to try and change
These song lyircs particularly reflect this tragic part of his character. The man he killed is himself(metaphorically) with drugs. He feels awful about making his mother sob for him (either in heaven or in real life). But it shows he's unwilling to change "Nothing really matters"
In relation to this, the theme/pace of Bohemian Rhasphody fits well with the pace of the ark and how it ends. Most notably the part of the song where the singer is retorting towards someone, is Ungalo retorting towards the world. He finally feels happy for once in his life
Ungalo's defeat is honestly one of the most tragic and glanced over deaths in Jojo as he is not even directly defeated by the Jobros. After Weather creates a character that automatically counters the ability. Something happens inside Ungalo.
First of all. I'd like to express to you how minuscule of an affect the Jobro's solution had. Bohemian Rhapsody's ability is a WORLDWIDE PHENOMENON. EVERY COUNTRY AROUND THE WORLD WAS AFFECTED BY IT. The Jobro's coming up with a solution in Florida barely affected anything
But this tiny example of failure sensed by Ungalo was enough to shake him to his core. Thoughts of failure and coming down from this "high" of happiness was terrifying to him. If he failed he would go back to the life he knew filled with nothing but despair and tragedy.
....Which is how he is defeated. Overwhelmed by these thought he lost the will to live and died. Ungalo was not defeated by an attack barrage or clever thinking by the Jobros. He just gave up. This also reflects the closing lines of the song as he gives up on life itself:
I also find it ironic that the book Ungalo picks up to realize his stand is being reversed is Peter Pan, the story of a boy who lives in a make believe land, eternally young. Thats Ungalo, a boy trapped in the trauma he faced as a young child that continued throughout his life
In conclusion: Most people consider Ungalo to be the least developed or even worst of Dio's children. As his arc is hard to read and untraditional. But when reading the subtext of song his stand is named after, I believe ads another layer to his character, making him my favorite.
I'm gonna keep going an analyze the other two of Dio's children because I do feel like people give them a lot more shit than they deserve, even going as far to say theyre the worst part of Stone Ocean, when they're not BY FAR
To reiterate, each of Dio's kids shares a facet of Dio's worst personality traits. This was done in a way to show Pucci the worst parts of the man he idolized in order to better understand him in order to move forward with his plans to archive Heaven.
The person many consider to be the best out of Dio's children is Donatello Versus, as he shares some of Dio's most prominent personality traits: Dio's selfishness and entitlement.
Donatello's childhood was filled with abuse from his mother and step-father, causing him to runaway at the age of 13, but this is not where his tragedy would end.
Donatello's stand ability was already affecting his life from an early age. His ability: Underworld, is able to excavate memories of events and people from the earth. This stand works on the idea that the ground has a "memory" of everything that happens upon it
Meaning, Underworld can summon any past event that has happened on the soil of Orlando, Florida and force those it chooses to live through those past events, examples being: Shootings, plane crashes, NFL football games, minerals, and even individuals who lived in the area
How this manifested in Donatello's life is that where he grew up was the same place where the American-literature classic "Holes" took place, his stand Underworld forced Donatello to live through the story of Holes which sent him to Juvie and mentally broke him beyond belief
This is where the parallels to Dio truly shine. Donatello's hardships growing up directly mirrors the hard life Dio was forced to live as a child, which fueled Dio's Narcissism, selfishness, and entitlement. Making him think he was better than other in the same situation.
In terms of the band Underworld, from looking through their discography I believe one of the songs that truely reflect this mental attitude that both Dio and Donatello adopted is the song "Sole Survivor"
The lyrics of the song tell the story of someone who has been beaten down their whole life by their surroundings. The song refers to their being a "Sole Survivor" at the bottom of a fallen mineshaft, giving a theme of hope to those listening that they can survive their hardships
However, I believe that the songs meaning is given a rather skewed view when applied to Donatello. Much like Dio, he has survived a lot of hardships in his life but instead of rising above them he has wallowed in them, feeling entitled like he deserves compensation from the world
With what Dio and Donatello share in terms of narcissism and entitlement, it also happens to be the both of their downfalls.
Mainly when it comes to Donatello, he sees himself as a more important person than he actually is, as he lacks the cleverness and is a much more impulsive and irrational person, as compared to Dio, his cleverness made up for where his pride would often crutch him
Now, when it comes to the last of Dio's children: Rikiel, I think it's important to remember that all of Dio's children are technically Joestars and share the joestar blood. I'm pointing this out because I feel like next to Giorno, Rikiel shares the most traits of Jonathan
A bit of backstory on Rikiel, Rikiel suffers from constant panic attacks: his eyelids constantly fell, his knees would give out, and he sweats profusely. His conditions are so severe that he is even able to drive a car, this lent to dramatically decreasing his self-confidence
Now, going back to my point of relations to Jonathan. We have to recognize the personality traits he adopted from both Dio and Jonathan as they aren't inherently negative.
From Dio: His determination and resolve in battle as well as Dio's attitude when he comes to power in part 1
From Jonathan: His respect for human life and ability to acknowledge a worthy opponent
When it comes to his relation to Jonathan, Rekiel's respect for the human spirit directly calls back to Jonathans in part 1, this gives Rekiel an honorable "evolution" of his character as soon as he recognizes his stand ability, which harkens back to Dio's come to power in Part 1
Now, compared to his brothers, I don't feel like the song of Sky High itself reflects many parts of his character, but it doesn't need to as it reflects the key point I'm trying to make here.
The song Sky High itself is sung by a man lamenting on how much potential a relationship he put a lot of effort into could have had if it weren't for a single "lie" that blew everything "sky-high"
I feel like this reflects Rekiel's evolution as a character by acknowledging that out of the three of Dio's children featured in part 6, he had the most potential to be a good person, as it is clearly shown he has a Nobel spirit.
Though this chance is blown sky-high by the lie Pucci told him, mainly that, following him and acknowledging his bloodline would solve all of his problems.
On a side tangent, I feel like Rekiels ability of controling the cryptids called "Rods" gives an interesting parallel to Dio gaining vampiric powers in part 1. They both gain control over a supernatural aspect of the real world to benefit them.
on another side tangent, when referring back to the children of Dio reflecting the worst aspects of Dio. Rekiel doesn't really fit into that, does he? On the surface I agree. But this is where a personal headcanon of mine comes in
How Rekiel behaves when he's first introduced is a rather nervous mess who is constantly freaking out before his "evolution". I feel like this might mirror Dios psyche as a child growing up in his abusive environment, only gaining true confidence when he attains power, like Rekiel
With a noble spirit that matches Jonathan when mixing Dio's worst personality traits it unfortunately leaves a character that, although might have the potential to be a good person, did not have the opportunity to grow as he blindly followed someone he felt gratitude towards
IN CONCLUSION: Most people tend to consider the Children of Dio to be the worst aspect of part 6, even going as far to say their inclusion ruins previously established characters. I disagree with that and believe that they served the purpose they were intended to fulfill...
To each give a more insider look of the man that has influenced almost the entirety of the series: Dio

With them we learn about some of the more interesting parts of his psyche and personality we wouldn't have ever thought about without their existence.

The End.
I'm eventually gonna compile these thoughts into a video for my YouTube channel bc I recognize this thread is WAYYY to long and might not be accessible to some who have trouble with that type of thing!
