How does #solareclipse affect the eyes?
When we look towards the sun, our pupils constrict(~3mm) and we cannot hold our gaze due to dazzling effect.
However, during an eclipse, as the amount of visible light from sun is significantly reduced, allowing a person to hold the gaze https://twitter.com/drvivarora/status/1210062101722611712
And the pupil also retains it's mid size (~6.5mm), allowing greater amounts of UV rays to enter the eyes.
(Contrary to popular belief, the emission of UV light from sun does not increase during #solareclipse )
The UV as well as IR rays literally burn the photoreceptors at yellow
spot of eye (macula) #solarretinopathy
As the retinal cells are not capable of regeneration, this loss of rods and cones is permanent.
In severe cases, it may lead to the formation of macular hole.
Although surgery for macular hole is available, visual prognosis, at best, is guarded.
Please make sure that you do not watch the #solareclipse with naked eyes.
