I remember how upset my good guy male comedian peers used to get about having to do morning radio or play comedy clubs cuz the culture is gross? I hope they get just as loud about this. But it can’t just be women speaking up. https://twitter.com/chemicalmishap/status/1273159524791259137
2. I’ve been screaming about how comedy is a different world for women since Twitter began. How the rape culture attitudes influence millions of their male fans and cause women harassment. Mostly my male peers DM’d me to assure me that they’re “sorry for their gender” or that
.) the harassment women get is just from guy’s in their mom’s basement. I felt so alone on this platform and out in the world because the good guy alt comedy type male comics would speak about EVERY social justice issue but the one in their own backyard. Yes. Many of you
.) when it was safe threw some retweets out about you-know-who-CK and were mostly the loudest about Bill Cosby. But until you stop being afraid of these guys - and until you stop being afraid of getting the same harassment your sister’s on the scene have always had - we will
.) still feel alone. I’m successful and am not in any of these positions where I can’t get stage time - but what world are we creating for our younger sisters out there? Do we just let them deal with it on their own? Did we do a FUCKING thing except on a comic by comic basis
.) shun the most egregious AFTER their trial or after their NY Times confession? What are we doing about rape culture? Cuz this time guys - it’s like all the other revolutions right now. I WILL NOT FUCKING LET UP. Until I see all of your social media feeds fighting this often
.) not just once. THIS IS YOUR NEW REALITY NOW. Welcome to the one that has been ours. Guys like this are like confederate flag waving assholes. We’ve let them have their own little “country” within the bigger, diverse, country of comedy. And they get louder & you good guys get
.) get quieter. ESPECIALLY the guys who have made yours, gotten yours and forgotten where you came from and still live. It’s up to us to show EVERYONE what comedy is. When guys speak up - women feel less alone. We talk about you. All of you. We have been disappointed in all of
.) for years. And don’t you dare just retweet this. Pause. Reflect. Think about it. Come up with your own words. And keep speaking. I’m gonna be a thrown in your side and up your asses. And some folks and I have been talking about banding together to solve this. It’s on now.
.) Until we drown out this culture and stand for something - you’re gonna get real sick of me. Talk soon. Love, Jen
