Tomorrow, I'm properly starting my marathon of films directed by Women of Colour.

We @JumpCut_Online have already raised 50% of our target of £3000 to support Black Lives Matter and The Trussell Trust.

Please #donate on @justgiving https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/jumpcut-charity-initiative?utm_id=66&utm_term=9dRAJqdjd
I've set an ambitious target (in terms of how many films I plan on getting through)....

.....so I'm gonna cheat a little bit and get a head start by watching @Juneteenthmovie now

1) MISS JUNETEENTH directed by CHANNING GODFREY PEOPLES
#52FilmsByWomen
MISS JUNETEENTH directed by CHANNING GODFREY PEOPLES was excellent. As everyone has said, Nicole Beharie is phenomenal. I *may* have done some Google research on Kendrick Sampson 👀 Craving Texas BBQ now....
2) BHAJI ON THE BEACH (1993) directed by GURINDER CHADHA

Chadha is one of my favourite directors - I love BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM (2002) BRIDE & PREJUDICE (2004), ANGUS/THONGS (2008) and BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (2019) but shockingly, not seen her debut feature.

It's on Amazon Prime!
"It is not often that we women get away from the patriarchal demands made on us in our daily lives, struggling between the double yolk of racism and sexism that we bear. This is your day."

"Have a Female Fun Time!"
BHAJI ON THE BEACH directed by GURINDER CHADHA was sooooo good

got emosh hearing the midlands accents from the start

the women were so beautiful and the storylines were varied and involving

loved it
made myself some sustenance ready to make an early start on my film marathon this morning

I'm watching a weekend of films directed by Women of Colour to raise money for Black Lives Matter and The Trussell Trust with @JumpCut_Online

3) THE NAMESAKE (2006) directed by MIRA NAIR and starring IRRFAN KHAN

Nair is another favourite director - I've seen KAMA SUTRA (1996), VANITY FAIR (2004) and QUEEN OF KATWE (2016)

(desperate to watch MISSISSIPPI MASALA but can't find it anywhere sob)
omg Linus Roache
Irrfan Khan's curls, glasses and moustache combo = powerful, very powerful
THE NAMESAKE directed by MIRA NAIR was so lovely

TABU as ASHIMA was particularly impressive

just remembered these gifs 👇 I need to start using them in the thread!

4) GIRLFIGHT (2000) directed by KARYN KUSAMA

Kusama is another favourite director - I love JENNIFER'S BODY (2009), THE INVITATION (2015) and her best imo DESTROYER (2018)

now it's time to finally watch her debut feature, starring Michelle Rodriguez

#52FilmsByWomen
5) MARLINA THE MURDERER IN FOUR ACTS (2017) directed by MOULY SURYA

this Indonesian film was recommended to me by @mjolkeraaen

it's available on Amazon Prime and is described as a "feminist western"

#52FilmsByWomen
the big guns have been brought out

MARLINA THE MURDERER IN FOUR ACTS directed by MOULY SURYA was excellent

I loved the music so much and it had an incredible central performance by Marsha Timothy

a great addition to the "woman having her vengeance" genre

#52FilmsByWomen
6) JINN (2018) directed by NIJLA MUMIN

[on Amazon Prime]

big fan of Simone Missick and Kelvin Harrison Jr so looking forward to this

#52FilmsByWomen
JINN directed by NIJLA MU'MIN was great

another beautiful score
Zoe Renee gives a fantastic central performance and Simone Missick was also exceptional

#52FilmsByWomen
7) A GIRL WALKS HOME ALONE AT NIGHT (2014) directed by ANA LILY AMIRPOUR

#52FilmsByWomen
I'm watching this on Kanopy btw

the western influence on the music is very similar to Marlina (which I watched earlier today) and also feels very Kill Bill
what a great movie cat
I wish I hadn't read the Netflix synopsis of JEZEBEL directed by NUMA PERRIER because I was waiting for certain things to happen which didn't...

taken on its own merits, it was really well acted by Perrier herself and especially Tiffany Tenille

#52FilmsByWomen
9) I started today THE NAMESAKE directed by MIRA NAIR and I'm going to end it with MONSOON WEDDING also directed by MIRA NAIR - nice pair of bookends

really looking forward to this one

but this is my seventh film of today so I gotta say:
well monsoon wedding fully made me sob I'm definitely not overtired tho

#52FilmsByWomen
10) WADJDA (2012) directed by HAIFAA AL-MANSOUR

again, I've seen MARY SHELLEY (2017), NAPPILY EVER AFTER (2018) and THE PERFECT CANDIDATE (2019) but not her feature debut

I'm watching this on Criterion

#52FilmsByWomen
WADJDA directed by HAIFAA AL-MANSOUR was as good as everyone has said

11) THE BODY REMEMBERS WHEN THE WORLD BROKE OPEN directed by KATHLEEN HEPBURN and ELLE-MÁIJÁ TAILFEATHERS

this is on Netflix

have heard great things again, plus it's a "one-shot" film apparently

this is my 52nd film by women of the year! #52FilmsByWomen
BODY REMEMBERS (on Netflix) was incredible. Highly recommend.

Sorry for the delay - I had a short break to do a quiz

Now I'm gonna start a trilogy of lesbian films - Watermelon Woman, Pariah and Our Love Story

starting with 12) WATERMELON WOMAN by CHERYL DUNYE

#52FilmsByWomen
WATERMELON WOMAN was fascinating on about 15 different levels

surprised it hasn't been brought up more in conversations re: "here is how you do alternative history" versus certain other films/TV shows

I love films that play around with documentary/drama formats

whew - so good
13) PARIAH directed by DEE REES

I've seen MUDBOUND of course but for some reason never got around to this before.

#52FilmsByWomen
14) OUR LOVE STORY (2016) directed by HYUN-JU LEE

[on Amazon Prime]

#52FilmsByWomen
ok my last film of the marathon feels like a fitting one

I have of course seen SELMA & WRINKLE IN TIME (which I love btw) but have put this off for the longest time, because I know it won't be an easy watch. Gonna stop being a coward and finally do this

15) 13th directed by AVA
some old photos of me in my Ava shirt

couple from when I took my son to see Wrinkle in Time and we both loved it

one from seeing Ava and her WIT crew at a Film Independent talk

(both 2018)
13th directed by AVA DUVERNAY is four years old but absolutely speaks to recent events

I urge people particularly outside of the US to watch it to truly understand that US police and prisons are not like the rest of the world
