I just learned about the true Portland horror story of so-called Morningside Hospital, brought to you by the same asshole colonizer who paid for the recently-removed Washington statue and the as-yet-standing Roosevelt statue in the parkblocks: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morningside_Hospital_(Oregon)
Morningside was later redeveloped to build Mall 205, so if you've ever wondered why that place has such bad vibes....
Patients at Morningside were exploited and forced to labor, similar to prison labor gangs that replaced slavery after the 13th amendment. Because it was a "medical" institution, Morningside called it "occupational therapy."
In addition to housing people locally, Morningside served as an institution for patients from the u.s. colony of Alaska. One has to wonder how many Alaska Natives were kidnapped from their families & subjected to horrific treatment in those walls under the name of "mental health"
Henry Waldo Coe was also accused of using hospital funds for private trips around the world, including to Apartheid South Africa.
So, anyway, Henry Waldo Coe was super into Teddy Roosevelt, as I've documented at https://twitter.com/luna_palante/status/1267646827949551616?s=20 and that "rough rider" statue still stands outside of the Portland Art Museum
Roosevelt was president of an expanding u.s. empire around the turn of the 20th century. After the "closing of the frontier" ended expansion on this continent, Roosevelt thought it natural that global domination should follow in the so-called "amerikan century"
Roosevelt's imperialism is rooted in a white supremacist world view, as illustrated by this contemporary cartoon showing the racist attitudes towards the newly-acquired colonies of Puerto Rico, the Philippines, Hawaii, and Cuba
