We waste 50% of medical school teaching useless factoids tested on step 1, so forgive me for not being sympathetic with PDs who don't want to do the hard work of finding applicants who are the right fit [thread] https://twitter.com/NEJM/status/1274122288464625664
The major problem with step 1 has always been the content is largely irrelevant for practicing physicians.
It's barely better than asking them to memorize world capitals or the names of folks who summited all 14 8000m peaks or batting avgs https://drive.google.com/file/d/1mLepDy84HurgDgNx8LoM0kP0kiu4lYNb/view

To be honest, that is more useful b/c you can use it to chat with patients
Doing away with step 1 score will allow educators to try to teach students how to practice good medicine before they graduate
Strangely this purpose of medical school is increasingly an after thought

Now, a related question is how to rank students for competitive specialties
I have 2 things to say
The major imbalance btw competitive specialties and spots is due to a broken reimbursement system that values the wrong things https://twitter.com/VPrasadMDMPH/status/1272210478756884482?s=20

Fix the reimbursement and watch students become interested in the precise specialties WE HAVE TONS OF SPOTS FOR
Thus, program directors will not need to utilize capricious benchmarks to exclude applicants

The second thing is for the time being
You may be forced with doing the hard job of trying to getting to know the applicants and deciding who is a right fit for your program in the absence of a score assessing their ability to memorize world capitals
Its your job

I do not take the extreme position that everyone is the same at everything, and that grading and rankings should be dissolved entirely
I do think some students are better than others
But I am more concerned with making everyone better than ranking students

And I certainly do not support any portion of medical education being spent on learning things that are not relevant for practicing medicine.
