- #COVID19 has fast tracked globalization of internet and some service businesses. Remote work is more normal now than 6 mo ago. You can build a global team and there will be more tools to support that as we go. There will be much less stigma around it too.
- Receiving services remotely/globally has become more normal too. That includes examples from #Telemedicine to Management Consulting. Before this, traveling to a client site was a (fake) value. Now, the focus is more on results. What problems do we need to travel for?
- All these changes will help with growth of bits & services companies. Much buzz has been around like #Zoom or #Telemedicine products. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Pretty niche services now can have real global audience. e.g. teaching a music instrument online
- At the same time, a reverse process is happening on atom businesses. A construction contractor in NYC that used to buy steel pipes from India is now looking for a supplier in North America to derisk the future of its business.
- This doesn’t mean that they no longer will buy from China or India. But they are ok with paying a premium for US manufacturers to keep the business going vs being fragile against global challenges.
- This will most probably force more #automation disruption in manufacturing, agriculture, logistics, etc. to manage the expensive Western labor costs.
- In the current political setting of the world and specifically the US and the division around global vs national economy, these disruptions (if they happen) will increase polarity.
- Majority of people in atom businesses will support national economies. They will be in stress of losing their jobs as a result of automation. They will be routing for economically conservative ideologies. Much more so than their current stance, fighting for their existence.
- The opposite will happen for people in bits businesses.
- The current politicized situation around reopening America and masks is just a tiny example of what is awaiting us.
