My 2nd sixpence-worth thread on the #PFG. How exciting is the commitment to in 2021 to withdraw #Shannon LNG from the PCI list?
Don't get me wrong - an end to #ShannonLNG is welcome. But why wait to 2021 when you might not be in Government to deliver on this important action?
What did President Trump do when he decided to withdraw the US from the #ParisAgreement on #Climate ?
He issued the withdrawal letter on the earliest date he could even though it has to sit on ice for a year. But it comes into effect the day after the US Presidential elections on 4 November this year, followed by a transition period to the new administration running to Jan
(Given Article 23 of the Paris Agreement, the earliest any party could initiate its withdrawal was 3 years after the entry into force date, so 3 years from 4 Nov 2016.
This when Trumps administration moved: 4 Nov 2019, but it only takes effect after one year : 4 Nov 2020)
So why isn't there a commitment to on Day 1 of the new Government to write to the EU Commission to unequivocally state that Ireland will be withdrawing ShannonLNG from the #PCI list and that decision should be considered final & separate to other subsequent changes to the list?
So while I shudder saying it:-Why didn't the Greens take a leaf from Trumps book and made sure you banked this one - as they seem to have conceded an awful lot in the #PFG in exchange? Carpe Diem! #Fracking #ClimateChange #LNG
